I have the option to buy a slightly used 6 month old iPad Pro 10.5, or pay a little less for a a brand new iPad 9.7. I know the obvious differences. My main. Red is for email, photos, web, reading, travel and out of office use (no laptop). Can’t afforrd the new 11 Pro unfortunately! Just get nervous buying a used 10.5(even though I know the person)....
Any input appreciated!

Both are great devices. The 10.5 will have a couple of advantages - the bigger screen being the obvious one (and it is noticeable) and I believe it is a laminated vs. the non-laminated display which may or may not be a big deal to you.

Personally, I think that buying used under warranty is low risk. Make sure to check the device fully (check all functions and ports) and allow time for that. If the seller is rushing the transaction then walk away.

If anything goes wrong with the device, then Apple should stand by the warranty. Also get the seller to provide proof of the remaining warranty as well - and then verify it via https://checkcoverage.apple.com.

Thank you!

I have used iPads since day one. They run forever without a hitch.

Both iPads are great devices. If prices are similar I would go for the iPad Pro. Having said that I bought recently a new iPad 9.7 for $250 w/o tax (new via Ebay).

At this price, it is an unbeatable proposition

I have 9.7 inch iPad (2018 model). For the most part is running great. However it has just 2 GB RAM and tends to aggressively close apps which is annoying to me. So have this in mind when choosing devices. If you will use apps that require RAM I would suggest to go for the 10.5 inch. Especially if there is no huge difference in price.

In general I am awry when it comes to buying used products but if indeed you can verify that the device is under warranty maybe the risk is worth it.

What are we talking here... $25 or $100 less?
If it's the latter, I'd go with the 9.7 iPad. Your use case is pretty low power demand. Either way, it should last you a good 2-3 years, which by then you can afford a used 11" iPad Pro. :)

2018 iPad fits what you need just fine and runs nice and snappy. Use mine everyday, rarely notice the lack of ram issue for my tasks which are very similar to what you’re looking for as well

For your use, both will work great. Personally, I’d go with the 10.5 as some of the “pro” features will be nice extras but that’s just me. You may want to see what the new non-Pro iPads look like if you decide to go with the 9.7. If nothing else you can get a bit of a discount buying the 2018 model when the 2019’s come out.

i also found a good deal for ipad pro 10.5 .. S$800(US$588) for 256gb LTE model ... free smart cover

I know this is late but Best Buy has the iPad Pro 10.5 256GB for $549 today. That's like $150 less than previous deals across the board.

With the tax, you still got a good deal just not newer :)
