Strong encryption

FileVault 2 uses XTS-AES 128 encryption to secure the data on your Mac.

My guess is it doesn't support AES-NI and I haven't come across anyone in the dev forums stating otherwise.

I think you misunderstood the question. AES-NI is an instruction set for CPU's that speeds up encryption. Similar to hardware acceleration for Flash content.

XTS-AES 128 is just an encryption type.

OP: Have you tried watching the "Security Overview" WWDC course? Should be in iTunes U.

Ah, yeah I did misunderstand the question. Thanks for clarifying.

Is XTS-AES 128 the only type of encryption supported then? No 256-bit like we can do with disk images?

I haven't. I was hoping to just get a quick yes/no for a friend of mine mulling over a Macbook Pro purchase.
