Aesthetic problem with the soon iPhone update/iPod touch

Ok, so all of us here have seen the new iPod touch and the image of the iPhone with the newly added iTunes Music Store.

I don't know about you, but I think the amount of blank space on the iPod touch looks horrible to me. It feels off, and rushed where if they took more time they could have arranged the art to resemble something like Front Row.

Enough about that, but the problem arises here with myself being an iPhone owner and im sure alot of other people.

So very soon we get a nifty little iTunes Music Store icon. Well, this is going to piss me off with how uneven its going to look. Being a Graphic Designer and someone who is slightly obessive compulsive I don't want any new icons unless they fill up an entire row!!!

So cmon, Steve, release iChat, Dictionary, Yellow Pages, whatever the hell else, just fill that row up!

No I am not going to hack my iPhone either. Rant over.

I have so many applications on my iPhone that I have to scroll through them to see them all. Surely you can conjure up 3 icons.

I know you're really busy replying to each new thread tonight with a witty arrogant response, but read the last sentence of my post. :)
 
Yeah, it looks awkward, but I can live with it.

The doubts I have is, would the iPod touch have games? If yes, allowing to put shortcuts in the main screen would be a nice addition hat could help with the OP problem.
 
First thing I thought was "Oh God, I hope I can delete it".
Of course since I wouldn't hack the phone, I'll be stuck with the out-of-place, silly, in-your-face &%$#@ icon!

Wish they'd have put the option within iPod menu somewhere.

It is your fault that you do not want to "hack," not mine and not Apples. Posting on some messageboard about three missing spots that can be easily filled with useful programs is futile.

As a consumer who spent $599 on an iPhone, I shouldn't have to hack my iPhone to do something that should have been thought out and seems fairly obvious to me.

So many iPhone users have this feeling of entitlement. It's completely irrational. I don't care if you spend $2 or $2,000,000 on a phone. You are not entitled to get whatever you want. You're entitled to get what they advertised. They said "no 3rd party apps" yet you still bought it. Why did you buy it? Because you think that since you spent "so much" on the phone, you are going to get whatever it is that you want.

You are not entitled. You got what they said you'd get.

Its widely known that Apple's promise of free software updates that will "surprise and delight" iPhone customers.

Claiming to be that much ahead of the market in what Apple got into (smartphones) they should have at least what many if not all other phones have. At the least an IM application, and I could think of at least two others included the iTunes Music Store that would fill up that last row beautifully.

If its only a matter of time, I truly hope it is sometime soon.

Amen, i agree 100% and i am very happy with my non hacked iphone !
 
Id hack mine if I werent chickens**t. General, care to point me in the right direction? Thing is, I just got it little over a week ago and hacking has been going on almost since day 1 so Im 2 months behind. Ive looked at the hacking options and there is ifuntastick, ibricker?, jailbreaking, doing stuff in terminal, installing springboard, summerboard, apploader...you get the picture. I dont even know where to begin, or what the preferred current method is.

I personally dont have any issue with a single row with 1 icon. Guess Im not anal like some people.

Lastly, I dont think the sparse amount of icons on the touch will be that much of an issue as they can set wallpapers behind their icons from my understanding.
 
Nevesis, I guess I am not really sure why you are upset about this, seeing that almost no smartphone I have ever seen has anywhere near the eye-pleasing GUI of the iPhone in the first place. How many phones have you owned that have even had any firmware or software updates offered to the end-user at all. So, you do not want to "hack" your iPhone...I guess you are just going to have to live with what Apple gives you then. I for one highly recommend that everyone "hack" thier iPhone because it allows users to create a look and layout that is pleasing to them and unique...something that third-party apps on other smartphones can only minimally accomplish. The hacking process is very simple and almost completely fool-proof, as itunes does have the ability to completely restore the iphone to original configuration. It is as if Apple designers knew that users woulld hack thier phones eventually and gave everyone a great tool for covering our asses if we screw it up (which, by the way, I have never heard of happening yet although I am sure it is possible if one were to try hard enough.)

Great post, but like others have said in this thread. Where do you start if you want to "hack" the iPhone and change simple things like the menu, etc.

I have been reading on here for a while now, and there is nothing that seems extremely simple.
 
Use AppTapp installer to install Installer.app on your iPhone:

Using it, install "Community Sources" and then BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH.

Then follow some of these instructions to login your iPhone via SFTP:

You can modify the files on your iPhone that way. Icons are *.app/icon.png ... the dock background is /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/SBDockBG2.png

Nevesis, there are lots of ways to "hack" an iPhone. There will be many computer savvy people who will have all sorts of suggestions that are certainly effective yet a little too complicated for the average person. Check out sites such as modmyiphone.com and iphone alley for all of the possibilities. For you, I would certainly suggest using a program called iFuntastic, available here http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/ifuntastic/. It is a realatively simple user interface and can do many different things such as import ringtones, change the homescreen layout, change application icons and even change colors and text of many different displayed items. There are tons of user created icons and themes available to use. iFuntastic is a pretty good program and is under constant development to add features and improve its' usability. Once you start hacking, you won't go back. And people are contstantly digging deeper into the iphone and creating true "third-party" apps and eventually, I hope that we will have the ability to significantly alter all aspects of the iphone's interface. The beauty of all this hacking, as I said before, is the ability to be bailed out by itunes if you don't like the results. The only word of caution though...be sure to sync with itunes prior to any modding as an itunes restore will wipe your phone af all your data. (Also, syncing does not back up photos taken on the iphone, notes written in the "notes" app, any sms conversations on the iphone, or any setting you have created, including email settings, ringtone settings, etc.) Proceed with caution, but have fun!

P.S. The one significant drawback to modding...an iphone update from Apple will likely require a restore through itunes and you will lose all of your modding work. So that means, every now and then, you get to start with a fresh, clean Apple iphone canvas to hack away on.
 
Agreed about the aesthetics. We should have the ability (through system settings) to choose which icons we want/need displayed. I could care less about an iTunes store icon. I am never going to use that service from my phone. I can simply wait until I'm at my laptop.

Come on Apple, give something we want... like fix the missing functions we've asked for from day one.
 
Well I agree that the ipod touch screen looks a bit desolate. I'm wondering if apple is following the reported income lead they've developed with appletv and iphone and reporting it over a period of time and adding new features. This also has me wondering if a SDK is in the works which will allow all that empty space to be developed officially with app icons for the iphone and now the ipod touch. Probably a total duh.

I do too, but maybe they'll add some applications with a software update. Also when they showed the iTunes Store button on the iPhone, it was pushed all the way to the right under Settings.

I have a feeling we will see more applications for the iPhone soon, but we may not see them for the iPod Touch, unless Apple wants to be nice and share. Because if the iPod Touch had Mail, Google Maps, Stocks, and Weather (which would work of course, if Apple allowed it) it would probably get too close to being like the iPhone. :p
 
When I saw the iPod touch I was like "holy god!, it does look really off" It seems like it would be unpleasant to use the home screen. when we get the music store for the iPhone I will also have the NES emulator, terminal and another app so it won't look bad. I do understand if the OP does not want to hack his iPhone. I really would like it if I didn't have to, thanks Apple.:D
 
What I'd like to see is landscape mode on the keyboard in all applications.. web, text, etc.

That said, in the area of custom apps, I'd love it if the NES emulator could be switched to landscape
