is anybody using this on a non-pro iPad? I’m thinking of buying it to tinker with photos on my 9.7” iPad but am curious how well it works without a pencil and slower iPad. I’m curious how well it works.

I here it works well, even on the iPad Air 2, it also just received a big patch adding bug fixes and performance optimization. I’d give it a try, worst case scenario you submit a request refund through iTunes support. Happy editing
