AFP file sharing on Lion MacBook Pro

Hello all,
I'm trying to set up AFP sharing between my macbook pro and my jailbroken apple tv2. I want to share media that is stored on an external HDD, and have been told to share using AFP because SMB was broken in Lion.

The path i need to use is supposedly afp://[[user[assword@]]server[/share[/path[/file]]]]

Can someone tell me what username, password, server etc i need to use for an External HDD ? It is connected via usb 2.0.
Hope someone can help me ... thanks in advance

Server is your computer DNS name or ip
User - the username you use on that computer
Password - the password for that user on that computer
path - the path to the mount of the external Hard drive.

just as a side note..since you are Jailbroken, you can install XBMC on the ATV2 and search for that harddrive on your network (make sure you share the mount). You can also install Plex server on your MBP and then Plex client on the Apple tv an watch all your media. (just a couple of more optons for you)

Thank you so much for that! Just one more thing, what would the path to the external HDD be ?
I already have XBMC installed on the apple TV so how do I go about searching for the hard drive. I was planning on connecting to the AFP through AFP

Thanks again for the help and hope that you can help me this last step haha !

path the drive on OSX usually is somethng like ""/Volumes/<Name of the External HDD>" ..you can see the name of the HDD when you connect it and you'll see the icon on your desktop.

Now, you can just share your drive on the network.. (go to System preference > INternet and Wireless Section > Sharing > Click on "File Sharing" > Add the External HDD to the "Shared Folders" List and click.

Now your XBMC should be able to search and see that drive on the network and play all your media.

Unless I am mistaken, AFP stand for Apple File sharing which IS what i described above, once the HDD is shared, XBMC should be able to see it. (given than both devices are on the same network)

Still cannot get this to work, thinking that i nay have to backup all the media and then re format the hard drive and try again, any ideas as to if this is a good route to go down or any other tips ?

Getting desperate now :confused:

don't reformat the hard drive, that won't do anything to fix the problem, if the mac is reading the hard drive fine, then the format is fine. that's like saying i have a flat tire, let me strip the engine on my car, and reassemble it.

on your mac, go to sharing,
add the folder (or drive) you want to share.
in the right hand column, make sure it says "everyone - read/write" if you're worried about others on your network having access, change it to "read"

Look at the top of the window you're in now it will say, "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: computer.local" your will be slightly different, but you want the part in bold, you can change the name here if you wanted.

you don't need a username or password now

the "\Volumes\external" that was suggested earlier is only on the mac itself, once you share it the "\Volumes" part goes away.

so to get to the drive you would type
"afp://computer.local/external"
then add folders after that if you need it so
"afp://computer.local/external/movies"

What exactly is not working? you getting an error?
 
i had the same issue wherein my whole external HDD was not showing up on media in apple tv.. even though it was connected to the Macbook(Lion). I formatted the External HDD to Mac OS Journaled(Earlier it was MS DOS - FAT) and then it worked...
