Hi, I've got a new NAS which I share between my windows PC, my MBP and my home media center, and also as a PLEX server.

I was wondering which protocol is better for Mac AFP or SAMBA as I have read that apple has given up on AFP in favor of SAMBA which is compatible with many devices. Any thoughts in terms of performance, security, etc?

Thanks

I switched to samba, authenticating via LDAP.

Works absolutely fine. Directory listings with lots (thousands) of files seem slower in finder, but nothing to write home about. Time Machine works if you use a newish version of Samba (newer than is available in the Ubuntu repos, annoyingly!)

AFP is pretty much dead in the water now.
