This happens when doing relatively minor tasks like watching videos, but also when doing more stressful activities like playing games. This is on a Retina Macbook Pro 13" from 2012. It does settle back down when there is no other programs running (except Activity Monitor.) This happened immediately after upgrading to 10.13.4.

Anyone else have this problem? Is this a known issue? Are there any fixes or workarounds?

I found another, much older, thread about users having similar problems with kernel_task. Inexplicably, this seemed to fix the problem: How to solve kernel_task high CPU usage?

I removed the HDMI cable going from my rMBP 2012 13" to my 24" Planar monitor and replaced it with mini-DP to DVI adapter, then connected to the monitor via DVI. I've been using the system for about a day and the problem does seem to be gone.

This makes NO sense whatsoever. How could an HDMI cable cause a kernel process to go nuts? But whatever...

Just do not trust cables:
I connected my MacBook Pro to Ethernet (UTP), which needs an adapter.
I found that the adapter sucks my battery flat when I close the lid in just a few days,
while, if I disconnect it every time, the battery can survive for a month.
So, do not be surprised.
;JOOP!
