I also got my MBP C2D today. Please try the following:

- set a light grey desktop background and check whether the display is evenly lit. My glossy screen has bright, ugly lower corners. Do you have matte or glossy?

- check you display for grain. Open Safari, look at the brushed metal part on the top of the window and move the window. If you can see the brushed metal pattern move, but notice a persistant layer of grain on top of it, you have the grain issue.

- what HDD do you have? I have the Fujitsu 120GB and it makes a faint clicking noise every few seconds. Can you confirm that?

Apart from these three issues, my MBP is great. No dead pixels, no fan noise at all, 50 degrees idle temp!

But I guess it has to go back because of the screen. I can't believe they put such a bad screen in such an exquisite laptop!!:(

I'm pretty fussy and expect near-perfection with anything I buy, but some people seem to obsess in looking for something wrong. If you've been using it for a few weeks and don't see any problems, then why intentionally try to find them? Granted, if there is a issue in functionality that you might have missed, it's worth giving it a quick check, but if you haven't noticed any unevenness or graininess in the display, why make yourself unhappy by trying to find an issue with it now?

I've cursed myself like this before. I've owned something for a long time, never had a problem with it, then someone will mention a "known defect" and upon closer examination, I find mine also has the "problem". From that point on, it's in the back of my mind, nagging me - even though I was always perfectly happy with it before.

When I got my new MBP C2D, I gave it a once (or twice) over. I was very observant the first couple of weeks to make sure that everything was in top shape. The screen looks great, the lid closes flush, it's cool as a cucumber, it doesn't make any strange noises, etc. I see no need to create artificial conditions in hopes of finding a problem ;-)

The grain issue was the first thing I noticed when I turned on my MBP. When it's next to the MB, the difference in screen quality becomes obvious. But I must admit that if I hadn't been on these forums, I might be less sensitive about that.

The bright corners and the hard drive clicks are really obvious and annoying. My old Thinkpad had the exact same issues and I always hated that.

For the cube effect look for "virtue desktop" on Google.
