Hey there folks!

Long time lurker here, but I finally wanted to post a question that I have been churning over here. Since the new IPPs were announced earlier this year, I was set on upgrading from my 12.9" Gen 2 iPad. As such, it was gifted earlier this month to my very appreciative parents.

And then I started reading about iPad Pros bending/curving, at times seemingly out of the box, and at times seemingly after minimal amounts of normal use. All of a sudden I found myself wondering if the structural concerns on the new iPad Pros was something that I needed to be more worried about, especially given the present dearth of good strong cases for the Gen 3 on the market as of present.

The current availability of super-discounts on Gen 2s has left me wondering... would picking up another 12.9" Gen 2 in lieu of a Gen 3 be the safer move, especially given the ongoing bend/curve issues with Gen 3? As a heavy photographer, the coming year's release of full Photoshop/Adobe CC on iOS is something I see myself taking advantage of heavily.... would the 2017 IPP likely struggle as opposed to the new Gen 3s? Are the performance gains on the new model truly all that substantial?

I wasn't at all involved in the Bendgate issues that plagued the initial iPhone 6S, is this something that would be likely to be resolved in the next iteration of the IPP? Would there be any benefit to waiting several months to purchase a new Gen 3 (process improvements, etc.)?

Any thoughts or opinions y'all could offer would be most appreciate.... I am somewhat befuddled as to how to proceed.

Cheers!

I think you just check yours to make sure it isn’t bent out of the box. Lots of us are super happy with our 2018 iPPs. I have 2017 12.9 and 2018 11. I have loved my 2017, but the redesign of the 12.9 is so incredibly tempting that there is no way I would pick up a second 2017.

The 3rd gen has obvious advantages when it comes to speed, size, and weight. That was the main reason I wasn’t a huge fan of the previous generation. I’d say buy and see if there is any bending issue. If not, you’ll likely be happy. If you’re on more of a budget though, the 2nd gen is still a great product.

Thank you for the comments. If, as it seems, that the curves are something that is evident out of the box, and not happening thru regular use afterwards, I really think that the new 12.9 would be the way to go. I am really drawn to the smaller size compared to Gen 2, especially as I travel for work a fair bit more now. Plus, having a new-ish MacBook Pro, the USB-C would be a convenient synergy with my laptop :)

Go for the 2018. It’s a big improvement over the 2017. The Pencil is very handy for writing and the new charging/mounting setup is very convenient. I’d recommend it.

As for USB-C, I’ve used my MacBook adapters to connect the iPad to an external display. It’s also nice being able to use the same charger.

Yeah man, i agree with what the others have said so far. We all have the new ones & dont have any bending issues whatsoever.

If you want to save some money, sure, go for the previous model. But it seems like you want the new one, so i say go for it! No worries. Inspect it out of the box if you are concerned, but if it checks out(and it should), slap a case on that puppy for extra protection, and enjoy!

I cannot say enough good things about my 11” ipad pro. Fast, beautiful, a real kick ass device.

That is definitely good to hear, and I definitely would be using a case. I have tended to have my iPads in fairly hefty cases historically (Griffin Survivor). I figure it might be best to go on ahead and order online but pick up in store, so that I can open it up there and make sure that it checks out nice and straight.

In terms of beefier cases for the new Gen 3s, are there any that folks have liked? I have seen UAG's Metropolis series seems to be updated and available now... and that has been about it. Otterbox seems to have an Apple-store exclusive symmetry case as well.

I do like the idea of USB-C connectivity. Whilst my current DSLR has the ability to wirelessly move photos over to an iPad via Bluetooth, I would love the ability to connect directly to a card reader and edit out in the field in places where my 15" MPB might be a bit....unwieldy.

I’m in the touchgate situation with my iPad Pro 2017 gen 2. It stops reacting on touch randomly after 10-15 minutes of work. So keep an eye on this issue as well.

As far as cases, i know there are some really heavy duty ones out there. I settled on one between those and the minimal basic folio. I ordered it from Amazon. From a company called FINTIE. It has protections for the corners and snaps in, so i won’t be worried about it falling out of a simple magnetic case. The cover is magnetic tho, so it sleeps and wakes ipad. Plus it folds back like the folio design. There is also a really cool apple pencil holder on the back for when i am not using or charging the pencil. And it only cost $10! Can’t beat that.

I do quite like the look of that case, thank you for the recommendation! I may definitely pick one up at that price (assuming I get an IPP bought here soon) and then maybe a more robust case for travel, etc.

Thank you all, this thread has been so helpful! It seems like a lot of the bending issue has been plaguing the LTE models, whereas I would be WiFi only, so perhaps that reduces the curve risk a little

By way of closure, I picked up my 12.9 Gen 3 at the local Apple store this evening. So far I really love it. The hypochondriac in me is convinced it may be slightly curved.... my partner assures me that it is not. For now it is in an Apple Smartfolio until such a time as I decide on a final case. My thanks to everyone for the advice :)

Hey, congrats! Enjoy your new 12.9” and happy new year!
