After Disk Utility I got this.....

When my new G5 would not start-up - ran the Disk Utility and got this:

Error Code:
2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0 - Master

Stopped at the Memory section of the test.

Tried to reinstall OS X and that failed - Told me there was a problem installing.

Any suggestions before I call on this one.

Boot into Disk Utility from the Install Disc, and Repair Permissions/Disk over and over and over. Then reinstall.

Ok - but how do I do this? Sorry - Holding down C when I put in the OSX disk just throws me into the install screen.

And I dont see where to deal with permissions in the Hardware Test Disk.

Direct from my Tiger Installation and Setup Guide: "Start up from the Mac OS X Install disc. Select your language and click the forward arrow. To open Disk Utility, choose Utilities > Disk Utility"

From there you can repair permissions and the disk.

Error code

I'm currently experiencing the same on my 10month old imac G5. I phoned Apple, gave them the error message & they are sending someone out on Monday to replace the HD. Obviously a known hardware problem to them.

I've now spent hours trying to retrieve the data on the HD (photos/emails/addresses etc), last big backup of mine was in January!!-could be worse I suppose). I've run disk warrior but gave it up after letting the rebuild directory run for 32 hours to no avail. The speed was inhibited by malfunction. I also think that I've made it worse, I can't even get the desktop up now.
Feel like throwing the machine out of the window but I don't think Applecare's warranty would cover the damage.
Give them a ring & save yourself some time.

To be fair, Apple don't make the hard drives and hard drive failure is just as common in PCs as it is in Macs. If you're struggling to get anywhere with the install discs or you cannot find them temporarily, fsck does the same thing. It might be worth giving this a try kimbloid, if only so you may be able to retrieve some data.
