After Effects CS4 not responding when Pasting from Illustrator?

I have a file that I am trying to paste on a new layer in After Effects CS4 directly from copying from Adobe Illustrator CS4 and every time I try to paste it the application says not responding and doesn't paste. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I have a super computer with 9gb of ram etc. so I'm not concerned with processing speed. Please help.

Mods if this is in the wrong section can you post in the right one?

yeah thats fine...I dont have a problem with deletion...which is why I made that note to mods in my original post.

I just didn't know which one was the best one. AE is a mix of video and graphics...motion graphics.
