iPhone 8/Plus After it turns on I can not make a phone call or send a text for at least 5 minutes, please help

Last night and today when I turn on my 8+ if I wanted to make a phone call when I press the first number I hear the tone sound which does not stop until I completely close the phone icon. Also if I try to text someone and press the first letter of their name their contact does not show up where it says To. I don't know if it's a software problem because I want to download iOs 12, however it's saying 3 hours just to back it up. I got an Apple appointment at their Genus Bar but it's not until next Thursday at 4:10 PM. I thought of going tomorrow morning when they open but not sure if they will be able to see me. So has anyone had this problem before?

it sounds like a frustrating problem to be sure.
try turning off WiFi calling if its enabled.
if i were you, depending on how close the apple store is to your location, i wouldn't wait until the time slot that was available over the net. if you show up (early) during the day, and calmly tell them that the phone can't even make a normal call, its likely they will give you an opportunity to be fitted in if an appointment doesn't show up.

I never had WiFi calling turned on.

Also since I posted my backup has improved on being finished, so hopefully I can download iOS 12 later tonight.

Finally I can still make phone calls or write texts, however as I previously said after turning on my 8+ I need to wait 5 minutes to do either one. If I can download iOS 12 and still have that problem I might try walking in without an appointment this Monday. Now if it matters I have Apple Care + so maybe that can help my chances? The Apple store closest to where I live is opening at 9:00 AM for holiday hours which is an hour earlier with the exceptions on Sunday's. Plus I think if I went tomorrow morning even for 9:00 AM there would be more people than usual. Hopefully downloading iOS 12 can fix this problem and I won't even have to make my scheduled Genus Bar appointment.

Update:

After getting more than halfway done it said my backup failed and it was on going for at least at a few hours, so I'm frustrated at that.

I'm trying it again and this time prior to doing it I signed out of iCloud on my 8+ in the settings and signed back in. If it does not work after trying that I'm going to walk into the Apple Store on Monday when they open at 9:00 AM, tell them in a calm way what happened and if they can see me without an appointment. I can not wait until next Thursday.

Last night my 8+ backup finally worked and finished at 3:06 AM EST.

I also was able to download iOS 12.1 and it completely fixed the problem of not being able to call or text when it turns on.

I was honestly and happily surprised this fixed those problems because my Dad has an iPhone 8 and is still on iOS 11.0.2 which is what I previously had and he has not had those same issues.
