After Jailbreak, iPhone no longer backs up

I used Pwnage to jailbreak my 3G 2.2 OS iPhone. It works great, and the iPhone will sync, but now iTunes complains that the iphone could not be backed up because it has disconnected. It does this each and every time. I can't call Apple, because they would make me upgrade to 2.2.1 before even starting.

Is there another way to backup my iPhone, and is there a way to upgrade to 2.2.1 and have it still be jailbroken without backing up first?
