I've recently fixed my Northbridge as it was really overheating, turned out one of the screws had snapped off. When I boot up the Mac turns on fine but I get no display. I've been using a Radeon RX 580, so I tried replacing it with the stock graphics card but still no luck. I'm also not getting the Mac boot up sound. Bear in mind everything was fine before I did anything.

Proceed with an NVRAM and SMC reset, see if it works.
Also make sure the GPU is well seated in the PCI-e slot and properly fed (power) from the mini connectors on the backplane.
What ROM is your board on, right now? 144.0.0.0.0 or an older one ?

I've tried that and it doesn't seem to do anything. I can't tell if my keyboard is connected or not, it's wireless but I've plugged it in and the eject button isn't ejecting the disk tray. Should I be able to eject it?

I've made sure it's properly connected.

It is 144.0.0.0.0

Since this is a 4,1 with upgraded CPUs that still have the IHS attached, I’d say either:
1 - one of your heat sinks is too loose.
2 - one of your heat sinks is too tight.

Hopefully it’s #1 because that’s easy to fix if your patient. #2 could be the end of your CPU tray.

How did you reattach the heats sinks? Tighten to spec? Count rotations? Finger tight, etc.

I re-fitted the heatsinks and we're rolling again, one of the screws is a bit dodgy. My northbridge is still at a high temperature though, just not as high as before.

I recommend reading all the posts in this thread; especially those regarding DUST.

Good to know all is fine with your CPU tray. How many Celsius° is the difference with your new Northbridge temperature compared to the old temp before you repaired your tray?

The temperature was about 128 and now it's around 90

My Northbridge is rock solid and steady at 63 - 64 Celsius.

Yes, you need an wired keyboard in order to do a proper NVRAM reset.

Just want to pointing out, wireless magic keyboard is also works well, assumed network/bluetooth cards are upgraded with bluetooth 4/AC one. I am always able to enter recovery mode and another commands such NVRAM reset key combo just fine.

Wired keyboard is failproof though, in my case I am just lazy to search them because I am already boxed my wired keyboard.

Yeah Celcius, the temperature seems to have gone up a few degrees since the replacement though...

90 celsius is hot for the Northbridge.

I hope you applied new thermal paste?

how is Northbridge die compared to heat sink?

Yeah completely cleaned the old paste off and applied new paste, the heatsinks are in the 50s

What are your current thermals for both idle and load for both the Northbridge Chip and your CPU(s) ?

What processors are you using ?

Single or Dual CPU ?

Please remember to specify F or C .

To @joelgg

There is a lot of information missing and disunderstanding.

Northbridge is 90 celsius
Northbridge Heatsink is 50 celsius ???

Give a full table of temperatures what shows nb die and nb heatsink, processor die and processor heatsink.

This is terrible, the northbridge heatsink makes (as expected) no contact to the northbridge.

You keep on cooking the poor thing.

Wondering how long it lasts...

If you sure that your heatsink is installed correctly, please check if your heatsink and northbrige are not concave or convex, this delta between your tray NB/heatsink temps don't make any sense at all and you will damage your tray really soon if this continues as is.

OK ... dual hexacore 3.06 GHz .

The Northbridge chip thermal is way too high for a System at idle .

And , it is way too high relative to its Northbridge heatsink .

The normal difference between the two is like 10 - 15 degrees C .

Yours are at 34 degree C difference .

Obviously , your Northbridge heatsink is not properly attached , there is failing TIM on the Northbridge die , or both .

Your Mac is unhealthy to use and you need to address this .

To place things in perspective , I've built Nehalem cMPs where the Northbridge Chip runs at 65 degree C while every major System component operates at full 100 % load . These Systems tend to last for years while being heavily used .

To second that I have a few dead CPU trays with broken northbridge heatsink spring rivets.

The thermal paste on those northbridge chips is rock hard telling the story of overheating...
