After having waited 6 hours in line for Harry Potter and barely made it with 15% battery life I decided to restore my iPhone to see if I notice a difference in battery life under normal use. I had used SBSettings to hide a couple of apps that weren't very useful but I didn't want to get rid of. I didn't bother un-hiding them since I thought the restore would take care of it, but to no avail. I They show up under installed apps in iTunes, so I manually removed them synced and reinstalled them. Still nothing, I have a haunting suspicion that I was right that the jailbreak leaves little nasties and I bet it I re jailbroke and got access to the root I could find some media files and ROMs from some of the jailbroken apps.

Anyone know how I could restore those two apps without rejailbreaking?

Did you restore from a backup or as a new device?

Don't know the difference. I hit the restore button, backed up my data, downloaded a 300MB file, phone went into restore mode. Afterward all icons were back in there default places, then I restored from a back up so I would have all my settings and contacts back. After the restore from back up I noticed that all the icons were back in the same place I had them during the time the phone was jailbroken except the missing apps.

OK. So it seems as though you restored from backup. Follow this tutorial to restore to a new device and complete a new restore:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414

The only thing is that instead of restoring from a backup, restore to a new device (first option).

Go to settings>general>reset>reset home screen layout. That should fix the problem.

Good to know, but didn't work. I'll try the above method. I'll have all my contacts if I set it up as new device?

Go into settings and enable, then disable restrictions. All of your hidden apps will reappear.

Done.

I'm a dummy and did this same thing last night to my phone too, and Speedracer's instructions above fixed mine (although I restarted my phone between enabling and disabling the restriction on installing apps) :D

Just make sure you sync first and it should sync everything to where you contacts are on the computer.

What do you mean where my contacts are? I don't use outlook, I'm hoping after I restore as new I can get my contacts from the back up. Its right now installing all my apps from the "restore as new". All my progress in F.A.S.T. lost yet again...

Do you use an email? Then it should sync from there.

If you sync your phone in "as new" condition it will pull all of your contacts from where ever it does it originally on windows. So if you did a backup and your iphone sync'd all of your contacts back to your computer before you did the restore then you should get them back NP.

I could be wrong, but I dont think if you restore as new, you can pull anything (contacts, data, w/e) from a previous backup...because thats not what you told it to do. You told it to restore as new and thus will create a new backup as soon as its done restoring.

But again, you really have no need to restore if you trying to unhide your apps.

why would you NOT rejailbreak to unhide the two apps? you're the one that left them hidden. This changes values in your phone that no matter if you restore to unjailbroken (using your backup of course, if you didn't use your back up, you wouldnt havr the issue as it completely wipes everything on the phone).

This is WHY they place warnings on Poof/SBsettings that if you are resotring or upgrading, you should unhide all applications to avoid this from happening.

Just jailbreak, unhide, unjailbreak. It's not that hard.

And yes, it will keep ROMs and other jailbroken info too if you use your backup. The only way to "rid of the nasties" is full restore, factory default, set up as new. But again, that wipes everything. Contacts, notes, game saves, everything.

We have a winner! I restored to new, the apps were there and no contacts after sync. I restored form backup to get my contacts and apps were gone. Leads me to believe that cupofjoe here is right. I'm gonna go home, jail break, go into the root, cause merry havoc (wipe all the roms and crap and unhide the apps). Wish there was a way I could only back up my contacts to my PC, edit them there and do other things so I can just restore my iPhone to new.

Guess with jailbreaking you do more damage then I was initially lead to believe.

No need to rejailbreak. Just do what Speedracer says.

...Tried it a second time and it worked. The first time I just toggled Restrictions on and off, that didn't work. When I tried it again I turned it on, went to the springboard and then back into settings and disabled it and it worked.

Thank you all, for your help.
