I recently got iPad Pro 11 inch, and as usual I installed my favourite applications. But soon I was annoyed by some apps showing enlarged phone interface. Tapatalk interface is atrocious on iPad, Apollo for iPad doesn’t have two column view, Gmail seemed weird, and don’t even get me started on YouTube app. I started visiting websites more often. And now I enjoy browsing web using safari for iPad more than just using apps for same services. More than a decade ago I started using apps for everything, and soon I found myself getting annoyed because a particular website doesn’t have a Mac app. Now it doesn’t bother me at all. It seems a bit funny to me so thought I would share it here. Have a nice day you all

Yeah the differences abound sometimes.

I still use Tapatalk heavily but I can understand the frustration. A lot of times web is just better but if I’m just going to quickly check for updates in threads Tapatalk is fine for that. I only lurk on a couple of forums though.

The whole Youtube PIP thing for example .. bleh.

Amazon’s app sucks balls right now for prime day shopping with huge grid presentation . .

Google Suite apps are too cut down. It's like they take out features as the device should be small, but when your iPad is 12.9" it's as big as a MBP - so give me full functionality!!

I uninstalled all g suite apps (bar a couple) and use Safari now.

Sam here but with Office apps. I prefer to access my OneDrive files using office online rather than the iPad apps.

For people like you, G Suite is love at first sight. ;)
Another example: the Amazon Prime Video app will only stream 720p whereas you can get 1080p on the website.
Why is that the case?

Only reason I can think of is that the app just sucks. Amazon is an Android shop so their iOS expertise may be limited. In the past, there have been features missing from their iOS Kindle app that were available in the Android version.

They also have an app in the Microsoft Store, so I wonder how good that app is. ?

Youtube Studio app also a joke, barely sees anything useful than basic stuffs there.
It’s great now Safari for iPad supports native desktop mode.

What kills me with using websites is when sites like YouTube or Amazon force open the app.

Even when you say “cancel” then it forces open the Amazon or YouTube app. I know you can just delete the associated apps but sometimes the dedicated app is useful so I just have to live with the safari/app ping pong game.

Progressive Web Apps have come a long way. Some Apps in the store are actually shells to the web. sracer mentioned this about Chrome OS, who has depreciated their own App Store and payment system. If Apple continues its antics with their App Store you’ll see it even more.

Given it fits the build once deploy everywhere concept, it really is the way of the future.

Except when you have poor or no Internet access and we're a long way away from full- and affordable - access for a lot people in this country.

True. in the US we need our politicians to stop yanking bills that would make broadband internet access a utility, like water and electricity.

And, most essential apps require a connection to internet anyway. However, a PWA should save state and function until a web connection is available. Like reading and writing email until it can send again.

if you want to view apps storing data in your browser, go to
Settings / Safari / Advanced / Website Data

This is more than Cache, if you were to clear your history and cache, it will be retained. Developers use this space like a database and to store files dictated in a manifest file for when there isn’t a connection. Every modern browser does this.
