Mobile OSs After the latest issues with Apple and iOS, are you staying or ... ?

Over the last few months we have seen ongoing issues with regards to Apple quality, privacy, and OS bugs. With every new release we are seeing, many of us, more and more issues arising.

With tall this happening, I would like to get a feel of what folks are really doing. Are you sticking with iOS? Are you branching out to another OS? Maybe a second device? Going all out for privacy?

Kindly take a moment to vote in the poll and let us know what you are really doing. Not looking to revisit or further discuss the issue, just what folks are actually doing.

Personally I am phasing out iOS and only use it on a work device. For my personal device I have migrated to Android and have 80% deGoogled it.

To clarify - I have set all my Google links to private where possible and use alternate stores and apps. That is my “80%”.
There are a number of articles and how-to’s on minimizing or removing OEM data collection and Google data collection.

iOS 15 is buttery smooth on my 13 Pro and I couldn't be more happy with it. I love how it works with my watch and our three Apple TVs so I'll be sticking with iOS.

Like the other companies do not have their issues...lol. Yes there are some bugs and stuff but they will be killed off soon enough. Also there is no privacy issue with Apple. Its either have your photos scanned in the cloud or on your device. If they do it on your device then they can end-to-end encrypt your cloud stuff which I would rather have.

That's not entirely true... at least not for those willing and able to do the work.

But with regard to leaving Appleland, my journey started a few years ago and I'm on my last Apple devices (iPad Mini 5 and 21" iMac). Everything else is Android, Linux, Windows 10, and Chrome OS. When those last two devices need to be replaced, they'll be replaced with a non-Apple alternative.

Phasing things out device by device is the most cost effective and least disruptive way to make an exit.

True deGoogling is installing a privacy OS.
As for minimizing, might want to try checking out Google on Android devices especially starting with Android 11. Between restrictions you can add and utilizing alternate app stores you can really cut back data collection. Even beyond what Apple claims to do.

You can “deGoogle”, aka limit data collection on Android (11 or greater) far more than Apple.
And yes, you can deGoogle an Android device. Try LineageOS

I can’t really answer the survey because I have several devices and I’m doing different things with them according to my best options available.

I currently have 2 iPhone 12 minis. I’m keeping them on iOS 14. I’m holding off trading in one of the 12 minis for a 13 mini while I wait to see Apple shake all the bugs out and get its supply stable so there will be fewer hardware qc issues as well.

My 12 Pro Max was kept on iOS 14. It’s being replaced by a 13 Pro I had no choice but to start as new on iOS 15, which I refuse to update any further for another couple of bug release fixes.

I have a Samsung s21 Ultra updated as far as it can currently be updated on Android. I’m not moving onto Android 12 via any independent means, but I trust Samsung will make a nice stable update when the time is right.

I am not updating my iPad mini to the new one. I saw the jelly scroll in person at the Apple Store. Ugh. No thank you. What a shame, I wanted a new mini since deciding to go with smaller iPhones. Pfft Apple. Pfft.

I’m beginning to consider the Samsung Galaxy Fold for somewhere down the road. That’s a lot of money to get an Android Tablet, but it’s a cool, unique device. I like some of the Nintendo emulators I’ve seen for it. I’m always going to keep a foot in Android because of the flexibility Android offers.

Apple still offers me so much convenience connecting and sharing with the people I’m meeting that I don’t intend to leave even if I am frustrated with their run of bugs. Nearly everyone around me seems to own an iPhone. We share photos and videos via airdrop after outings with our kids. If I was using just my Samsung phone there would be an added layer of complexity to sharing and communicating that I don’t think the other moms and dads would appreciate.

Personally I have doubled down on Apple. I have never had any Google or Amazon devices in my house and I am getting all my email, messaging and browsing moved over to Apple apps and domains.

I like having both an Android device and at least one Windows PC in addition to whatever Apple products I have. That said, when it comes to regular day-to-day use, I still think Apple's products are better and I rely on them more. Even if I have an Android phone as well, my SIM has stayed in my iPhone for a long time now. ✌️

More of an experiment. Could it be done and how far and what level of control do I really have?
I found at the smartphone level for Android I have quite a bit of control.

For casual Android user, best bet is to use Pixel phone as at least you're just dealing with Google itself. Biggest problem is that Pixel phones are not available in many markets.

Samsung is the next best thing, as they have their brand to protect. And Samsung has also been using security as one of their selling points (Knox). So at least as a company, Samsung has an interest to keep things within reasons. And if somebody found out about something, there's likelihood of Samsung to do better to protect their brand.

For more technical user, custom ROM have many privacy-focused ROMs. However, many apps such as banking apps won't work on rooted/non-official ROM (for good reason, as there are also Android phones out there sold with firmware injected with malware).

I’d like to see Apple fix bugs that have existed for a while now. The default mail app is a nightmare, the notes app never remembers my viewing choice, apps crash on a regular basis. I’d also like to see the quick settings actually enable and disable settings. If I turn Bluetooth off via quick settings it doesn’t really turn off, same with Wi-Fi, there’s not quick setting tile to enable/disable location services. The notifications are a mess on iOS. I’d also like an option to speed up the animations as they seem needlessly slow. I know there’s an option in accessibility but it’s not the same

I only switched from Android 2 years ago and the Android quick settings, notifications and! Split screen apps are 3 things I really miss from Android. Overall, I still prefer iOS, but I’m genuinely fed up with the bugs now. iOS notes hardly ever remembers that I’ve chosen gallery view, the email app has had problems for a while now.

iOS is still my mobile OS of choice, but it’s far from stable. And it’s been this way since iOS 13 for me. I’m going to keep an open mind with the pixel 6 pro coming out soon and the galaxy S22 ultra early next year. I’m happy with my 13pm, but I do feel like apple are being lazy with bug fixes because their sales are still through the roof. And I do hope apple deals with all the bugs in iOS as soon as possible.

I agree. For privacy iOS can’t hold a candle to custom ROM’s such as Graphene OS. But with that kind of locking down we do limit ourselves a bit.

I use all platforms (iOS/Android/PC/Mac) so I flip back and forth. I like iphone hardware but find the OS is borderline unuseable it's so bad (fundamentally unimproved for many many years...I'm talking homescreen customization, app layouts etc, and let's not even mention the godawful music app or the stupid double-click/Face ID/PIN entry Pay methodology). Example: I recently got an iphone 12 on a plan upgrade, used it for 2 weeks, quite liked it in general terms, but when I went back to my Pixel 5 on Android 12 and Oneplus 7T on 11 (2 year old phone), I couldn't believe the difference, you forget how much better useability is now built into Android.

I'll keep the IP12 because I LOVE airtags and use them a ton; I bought a new macbook Air M1 that is fantastic, but my daily driver phones will continue to be Androids. I have a Pixel 6 on the way but may actually cancel it and hold off on any upgrades until I actually get some mileage out of my OP and Pixel 5...getting a bit tired of the unwinnable race to keep up.

EDIT a week later: Did in fact get the P6 but am returning it today after 3 days, and going back to my P5 and OP7T. P6 needs face ID if it wants to play in the Flagship league...we're coming into glove season here in the frozen north and fingerprints/PINs/patterns are a massive PITA for the next 5 months.
