Your battery was on the edge of needing replacement before you updated.. Updating just pushed it over the edge

The way others have explained it, is the phone checks the battery stats with every update, so it's likely just coincidence. But batteries are finicky and don't live forever so there's that.

Its checked at an interval far more frequent than just at every update.. all of us eventually see it drop 1 or 2% eventually even without updating (or restarting).

Right. It just seems to be dropping more with updates.

From what I've read about many peoples' device (re)charging habits, they don't use their devices until auto-shutdown, and my own experience*, I guess the battery check/calibration happens during OS updates/upgrades as well as reboots/restarts. In other words, many users very rarely reboot their devices beyond OS updates and thus by the time the system rechecks battery stats there indeed may have been a huge change. Basically, not surprising, odd.

* No large percentage drops in a short period. I typically fully discharge, until auto-shut down, and fully recharge my devices. So, they reboot often -- every one to two days for iDevices. I also shut down my Apple Watch overnight because (as of yet) don't feel a desire to utilize the sleep features.
