after upgrading MP1,1 to X5365, CPU B is always 5 degrees C warmer

Hi,

After upgrading MP1,1 to X5365 CPUs I have been watching the temps carefully an noticed that no matter what CPU B is always 5 degrees warmer than CPU A. Idle or 100% load - same thing. Does this mean I screwed up the thermal paste application on CPU B?

Also, the CPU temp range is 30-50 degrees for CPU A and 35-55 degrees for CPU B - is this considered normal for the readers of this forum?

You have nothing to worry about for those temperature ranges.

You should test with Prime95 to double check load temperatures.

One CPU is usually warmer than the other, for a number of factors.

As long as they aren't overheating (90+C *Core* temperature), then it is ok.

All is well. My upgraded MP CPU's today, Ambient Temperature 16ºC, run at 28ºC and 32ºC for A and B respectively and usually do. In summer months sub-tropical Australia get up to 44º and 48º respectively.

I have the same x5365 setup and notice the same thing. On a hot summer day here in Southern California, and rendering for hours, it'll go up as high as 60/55 at the most. But usually numbers similar to yours on average. Always one generally 5 to 10 degrees higher than the other. I suppose it has mostly to do with one CPU being physically below the other in the case. Anyway, been doing those temps no problem for two years.

Xeons are designed by default with thermal management built right in meaning they will not overheat. they will automatically reduce the voltage to the cpu when temps get too hot and thereby reduce the temp.

Thermal Monitoring Technologies protect the processor package and the system from thermal failure through several thermal management features. An on-die Digital Thermal Sensor (DTS) detects the core's temperature, and the thermal management features reduce package power consumption and thereby temperature when required in order to remain within normal operating limits.
