This may well be a stupid question but, after upgrading to Yosemite, is there any reason to keep old Mavericks backups ?

If I wanted to use an old Mavericks backup, could I do so with Yosemite installed ?

Or would it require me to reload Mavericks to do so ?

It depends. If it’s a Time Machine backup then you can still use it for restoration purposes. So if you want to recover a file from your Mavericks backup, you can still do that in Yosemite. But if you consider keeping it for a downgrade, then I would say it will be less useful to you the longer you keep it. If you ever consider downgrading to Mavericks, the easiest method will be a clean install with a manual transfer of your files from your Yosemite installation.

You could of course keep your backup and use it as a restoration point as well. But you won’t get around manual transfer either way. You could free up some space instead and resort to a clean install.

Thanks KALLT, that explains all I need to know.

Yes, it is a time machine backup and so I might as well leave things as they are.

Appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I did a manual Time Machine backup and then turned it off right before upgrading to Yosemite. I'll leave Time Machine turned off for a few more days just in case I need to revert to Mavericks. But, so far so good with Yosemite.
