After you do a search in Mail, how do you view your new emails?

Like after you are done with your search. Let's say 2 new emails came in and it's at the top of the list. How do you get to it? You are stuck in search mode.

clicking on another folder doesnt actually clear the search field

It clears the searches results from the mail field and shows me the mail that’s in that folder, rather that what I had searched on. Clicking into the inbox then shows me my inbox mail, rather than my search results.

what do you mean? By clicking on another folder, it clears the searches results? It certainly doesn't. What version are you on? Are you on big sur? In big sur it doesn't

If the problem is on Big Sur's Mail.app, then it may well be a bug only in that version of the app or OS.

Moderation Note

Please confirm that this only happens on Big Sur's Mail.app. If so, then this thread belongs in the Big Sur forum, not a more general one. I will move it as needed, but only after confirmation of where the problem occurs.

well yes but after that, you are still stuck with the list positioned to some email that is 2 years back. You can't see your new email

I'm on Big Sur, Mail.app version 14.0, when I click the "x" I go back to the top of (whatever) list I was watching beforehand, and see the newest mails there (as mine are sorted by date).

Thanks so much for video, that explains it a lot!! So it appears the main difference between your video and mine is that I have the email selected in the 'searched' list. And if you have an email selected, it won't reset after.

I guess you can argue that makes sense, because the email on the right panel is still showing the one I selected so it doesn't want to scroll back to the top. But here's the question, how do I unselect the email in my 'searched' list after it's done so that it has a chance to go back to the top?

The issue isn't that you have searched. It's just that once you are really far down in the inbox, there's no intuitive way to jump back up. Home on a full keyboard does nothing.

Here's the fastest way I found.

⌘+2 to go to Sent folder, ⌘+1 to go back to Inbox

*edit: for anyone testing, won't work with manually scrolling down, as ⌘+1 seems to default to find your previous manual scroll position. but seems to always ignore previous selection via search
