Firstly a big hello to everyone!

I had a question I was hoping someone could help me with,

I consider myself to be very inexperienced when it comes to technology and having bought a iPhone 5 recently I have heard that 'Jailbreaking' it can bring many benefits.

I have heard many different things that people have been telling me and its got me a little confused.

Therefore I would like to know,

1. After Jailbreaking, can I simply sync the phone again with iTunes as normal?

2. What settings/functionality is lost after Jailbreaking?

3. Finally, what is the procedure of updating the firmware after Jailbreaking?

Any help would be appreciated!

Yes.

iCloud works as normal too.

2. What settings/functionality is lost after Jailbreaking?

After jail-breaking some have lost the use of streaming apps such as sky go but the devs of the tweak Xcon Beta are trying to battle that.

3. Finally, what is the procedure of updating the firmware after Jailbreaking?

You can update to 6.1.2 right now. The downside to jail-breaking is you will need to watch the blogs and community news to wait for a new jail-break to be released. When a jail-break is released to support 6.1.3 for example you could use a tweak such as aptbackup to remember your tweaks or use your cydia account to re download them.

Procedure is to hook up your phone to itunes and restore which puts it back to stock. Update to the new iOS. Then perform a back up to itunes and or iCloud. Then re jail-break using the new jail-break tool. Basically its a cat and mouse game between apple and the devs !

Any help would be appreciated!

Most of all enjoy your iphone how it was meant to be used and enjoy the freedom from apples sandbox.

The key for me to jail-breaking and using tweaks is to do a little bit of homework on each tweak to ensure it has no compatability issues with tweaks already downloaded and try not to go mad downloading everything in sight.

Their is a wealth of knowledge on here, other forums and you tube.

Make use of it.

1. Yes
2. None
3. After you jailbreak, you need to be a bit cautious when updating your software. Always create a backup thru itunes before attempting to jailbreak. Also, you need to be certain that after you do upgrade to the latest firmware, you will still be able to jailbreak. For example, ios 6.1.3 is supposed to release soon. It's said that 6.1.3 will close the exploits that are needed to jailbreak. This basically means that ppl with 6.1.3 wont be able to jailbreak.

head over to the evasion website to know how to jailbreak. IF you do decide to jailbreak, back up your phone thru itunes first & follow the instructions posted on the how to jailbreak thread in this forum.

hope this helps.

Big thanks to both of you!

So lets say I download a paid app off the iTunes store,

If i restore my phone,

update to whatever the future firmware is,

jailbreak again,

restore my phone,

Will at least those settings from those paid apps in iTunes keep their settings/stats/information?

Am I right in assuming only the tweaks and mods will need to be re-downloaded either manually or using aptbackup?

Yes.

The backup made to iTunes / iCloud do not include the tweaks. It can include hidden files thats cause no harm to itunes or your phone.

Some people prefer to back up as a new iPhone so no minor jail-break files are carried over and believe it makes their iPhones work better with less junk being re installed.

I always update from a back up and have done for years with no issues.

its down to preference and habit !

yes you've pretty much understood that correctly.
say you have a paid app from app store & your phone is not jailbroken.
so what you do is create a backup from itunes. (your paid app is now backed up)
restore your phone as new
run the jailbreaking process (look up evasion.com)
restore from backup (to get your paid app that you backed up in step 1)

Awsome, well it seems I have nothing to lose and honestly really do like some of them tweaks and mods out there!

I will be attempting to jailbreak later today!

P.S: A little off topic but my final question is that, I was wondering if anyone knew what the tweak was called that lets you unlock your iPhone with a 'Verticle', 'Slide to unlock' button as opposed to the regular horizontal swipe that you have to do?

Not fully true.
The iCloud backup CAN include corrupted files , even without jailbreak. This is causing interference with other files on your device .

there are several slider themes that do this. jailbreak your phone first. make sure u download Winterboard & iFile from Cydia & then it'll be easier for us to help you & tell u how to get the vertical swipe down for unlocking.
g'luck!

Excllent!

I will have it done in the next hour or two and will report back once its done!

Just another big thank you to you guys for the help! Much appreciated! :)

Just throwing this out there as well, but you don't need to always update to the latest firmware version.

I'm not quite sure where the whole "update everything" mentality comes from, but I only update if I need/want to.

Unless an update releases a key feature you want, I'd stay away from it, just to avoid the annoyance of dealing with carrying your jailbroken stuff over. Plus, to avoid any possible bugs that may arise with a new version. More or less, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you don't need to update, don't.

The only exception I would say is if an update fixes a security issue. However if it's not a widespread issue (like the PDF exploit that existed in iOS 4) you probably don't have to worry about it anyways, since it's highly unlikely to be used against you.

If there is a security issue, chances are you'll hear about it on this site or somewhere else.

But again, if there's no security issue, and no new feature you want in the newest version, just save yourself some time and hassle, and stay away from updates.

Agreed. But for someone who's just starting out, it makes sense to be on the latest firmware doesnt it.

I for one, jailbroke with 6.1.1 & then had to repeat the process with 6.1.2 cos i heard battery life improves. So he might as well be on 6.1.2 (incase he's not) and then jailbreak.

Ive never had any issues over the years although I submit some may have.

Please give me an example of the files that can cause "interference with other files on your device".

I'd like to look into them in more detail.

Why are you keep nagging me on my back? I've had issues before and when I restored I backed up from iCloud. The problems persisted. Once I restored and set up as new, they vanished.

Im not !

Where have I "nagged" you in any post.

Im genuinely interested in what you've said, and have simply asked for an example.

Alright. Well, theres this game called Earn to Die. I don't know if you heard of it already but there is this button you have to push in order to drive the vehicle forward. Well, I hold that and suddenly after 10 plays I notice it stops responding after some runs. I reinstall it and the same thing happens. I restore and backup from iCloud. Same thing happens. I restore, set up as new and the problem vanished.

No I've not heard of this game and i'll have a look for it to see if this happens on my iPhone.

Just of interest have you tweeted the developer of the game to report the problem.

Edit: Played the 'lite' version of this game and played to day 29.
Seems ok. Are you still getting the issue with game play

I forgot to tell you that this occured in other games as well where you press down something for a long period of time it stops responding.

This is why I never took it to that level, because the problem is universal.

Yeah, you're right on that. I should've made that point as well. But if this is your first jailbreak, and it is possible to get an untethered jailbreak of the latest firmware, you might as well. That way things will be supported and you'll have what you want / need for a while, at least until another jailbreakable firmware has something you really want.

Im wondering how many people will be tempted to break their jail-break when iOS 7 is released, rumoured to be later this year, obviously depending on what it brings to the table.

;)

There is a good chance I'll be tempted, but I don't know how far I'll go with that. I've got a ton of great tweaks installed and I'm not so sure I'm willing to give up BiteSMS, NCSettings, Springtomize and f.lux.

Anyway good luck to the OP! I'm finding that my iPhone 4s on iOS 6.1.2 with this jailbreak is the most stable and enjoyable jailbroken experience I've had.
