Can anyone tell me why there is an 18 age limit on Apple Pay cash? My son has had my Amex card on his phone and watch for years...uses it regularly. Now that I am savvy to Apple Pay Cash, it is a much better option for dispensing him cash in allotments rather than the "Carte Blanche" of him having my credit card enabled. However, him being 17, I cannot enable Apple Pay Cash on his phone for receipt from me. I see the only alternative is to change his age in his Apple ID settings to make him 1 year older. Anyone know why this limit exists, and is there a better way around it?

I would think because it's like opening a checking account or a credit card (since it is a Discover debit card). There is no way for there to be an authorized user, so the account holder has to be at least 18. Why not add him as an authorized user on your card? I believe amex allows you to set spending limits for authorized users.

Green Dot Bank provides the back-end for Apple Pay Cash, so it might be something with their agreement with Apple…my thought was to open a free checking account with no fees (decline instead of overdraft, no direct deposit requirement, etc.), but many of those also require the individual be 18. While it's not as slick as Apple Pay Cash, it at least follows the "rules" and you could push money to the account for spend.

If it were me, and if things are working as-is, I'd just wait until he's 18. Is he using your actual Amex or is he an authorized user?
