I have only ever played AOE I and the Rise of Rome expansion and I loved it. Been a few years now and I have a nice new powerful Mac Pro.

Want to get back into this type of game - what would people recommend? I used to enjoy the scraping around to gather resources as you beat off attackers, to slowly gain supremacy and land/resources!

Happy to play on Mac OS or Windows platforms. Recommendations please..

Age of Empires I remains the best. :D
II & III just never hit the spot for me.

Maybe it was the period AOE I was set in… Early and Classical.
I just didn't get to grips with the Medieval and Colonial periods.

I Also tend to stick to Civilization… III for preference since I have never had satisfactory end-stage games with Civ IV. Slow as treacle on a winter's morning…

Not so much a recommendation as my own preference. ;)

Which strategy 'god' game would you guys say was the most like AOE I in terms of gameplay and general vibe?

I like empire earth 2 (if one were to *ahem* "look around" one can find a cider port out in cyberspace ;) )
As far as between aoe and rise of nations, rise is better graphics wise (aoe3 isn't too bad, just a little different)
