Hey Folks, need some suggestion.

I have 2016 MBP 15inch with touch pad, i have been using it for the past 8 years and works great (Except the keyboard issue). Since its aging i am worried that it might die one day abruptly.

I was thinking to buy another one (probably 14inch M3/M4).

Should i Buy a new one or wait until this one dies?

even the super binned M4 in the $1,499 MBP will be an insane amount more powerful and efficient as the machine you have right now. M5 bumps won't be that much higher. Heck, if you can find a deal on an M3 machine or even a specced out M1 Pro or Max in great or new condition, it'll be mind blowing going from an old Intel to an Apple Silicon. They're worth the hype.

If the keyboard has issues. I don't see why you'd want it around anymore. At least as your daily driver. I wouldn't count on it dying abruptly. My 2006, 2009 and 2015 are all chugging along. You replace a computer when it no longer adequately suits your needs. I'd think a laptop with a problematic keyboard should fill that criteria.

Will the apple intelligence be available on M1?

New m4 (or m4pro),
or
Closeout m3 (or m3pro) at sale prices...

...either will be a BIG "jump upwards" from what you're using now.

I would advise you to get at least 16gb of RAM and a 512gb SSD (1tb is better).

will i get a good price if i seel privately or trade in with apple?
Good is relative to the buyer and seller. I doubt Apple will give you much other than to offer to recycle the device for no charge. Selling may get you a little money, but not much. Intel Macs are just really worth much anywhere.

If you have gotten 8 years of use out of your machine, you got your money's worth.

I am in the same boat - a late 2016 15" MBP and the keyboard has multiple keys that double tap (two "o"s or "I”s when I hit those keys, possibly other keys as well). Only my left speaker is working also. I was told it can’t be replaced as it is a motherboard issue. I’m excited to get a new M4 Pro MBP after all these years.

Apple’s trade in calculator offers me nothing for my 2016 15” i9 processor, 2 TB SSD machine. A local repair shop estimated a $200-$300 CDN trade in value with him, as the parts are quite valuable for repair jobs, the screen especially, he said. So that’s what I’ll likely do when I get my new device. Perhaps a local repair shop will offer something similar for yours? Better than nothing and helps reduce the damage of buying a new machine. :)
