AHHHH! I spilled water all over my macbook!

I accidentally knocked over a glass of water right onto my macbook, and it got DRENCHED. I immediatly shut down the computer, and tryied to shake all the water out... It sounded like some crackling was coming from it though...

I Waited 2 hours then tried to turn it back on, and nothing happens...

Is there any chance that it will come back to life, Will apple repair it and possibly not know it was water damage, or if they do, any idea how much a repair would cost? I have applecare, but i know that doesnt cover spills, BLEGH.

What can i do??!

Turn it off and don't try to turn it on again for a couple of weeks. It may already be too late...you want to make sure that thing is completely and absolutely bone dry before you try to turn it on again. Also, take out the battery now and disconnect the power also.

We'll have our fingers crossed, but I'm not sure it looks good at this point.

I had safeware accident insurance on eit, but im skeptical bout their turnaround time, should i send it to apple or just get them to replace it, Also i have applecare, but seeing as this laptop was only 6 months old, if i end up getting a new one through the insurance, will Apple let me transfer it to the new one?

I don't really have experience with insurance or Applecare, but I'm sure other users here do (if they come out of all the keynote and new product threads).

And others might have better advice on how to better dry out the macbook, too.
Just hang tight and don't try to use it again until you are certain it is bone dry.

well, it started back up, but its not charging from the battery.

Im gonna send it back to apple I think, and see if they'll fix it, and not mention the water....

Worse comes to worse they'll know its water damage, and ill Insurance it...

some guy I know droped his ipod in the toilet, it just sliped from his pocket, he said it had been in his backpack and a little bit of rain had got through and they replaced it under warenty.

Congrats! FWIW, I believe that if Apple chooses to replace your computer, then AppleCare transfers to the new one, or at least the outstanding balance does. However, if you replace it yourself I do not believe it will transfer.

Yeah water isn't that bad, but if it were coffee or pop or juice, you'd be toast.

I've had thoughtmares of me spilling coffee on my PowerBook... *shudders*

You were lucky this time, but in the future, quit trying to mess with it until you give it several days to dry out. In fact, you should do that despite the fact that it's working now. There still could be moisture inside that could get into places it shouldn't be! Beware.

I did that with my PowerBook 2 years ago, its still going strong.

I think its a case of making sure you get all of the water out of the laptop straight away.

I'm a cereal offender when it comes to getting phones wet. But I've never had anything die, just leave it for a few days and it's OK.

I knocked over a cup of milk on my 15" Titanium a year ago. The screen distorted and shut off, the power cable started making a funny noise, and milk was coming out of all my ports. It didn't come back to life, and Apple quoted me ~1,100 to fix it. So I just got a new Aluminum instead. It was a painful $2,000 cup of milk I spilled, and I was definitely crying over it.

Spilled water, but now it works... This is what you should do. Turn it off. Remove it from wall power. Remove the battery. Use a hairdryer on the low or just blowing cool air setting to help evaporate any water that might be inside the case, keyboard or battery.

My daughter recently spilled coca-cola on her ipod nano. She wiped it off and everything worked except you couldn't turn it off.

This is what I did to fix it:

Discharged the battery, and turn it on over and over again until it would no longer even try to come on.

Sprayed alcohol into it.

Wiped it off and took a hairdryer to it using the low heat setting. Did not get it hot.

Three days later I charged it and it now works to perfection.

water damage sucks. If it's just water, pull the batter and plug as fast as humanly possible. Let it dry out for a few days and usually it'll still work. btw...they can tell if you spelled something into it.
