air drop: user graphic doesn't show

hi

on macOS High Sierra 10.13 and iOS 11.03, air drop is working great, but in the past the graphic that was associated with each device/user appeared. but now i am only getting the generic monotone graphic appearing for each device. how to get it to show the actual graphics that i have associated with each device?
