Air Pods Max color fade

I bought my Airpod Max when they came out but I haven't used them as much as I thought I would. Because of Covid I worked from home, so no rides to the workplace where I would use them.
So they were in my office room at home and just laid them down there.
After a few months I wanted to use them again and saw, that the color on one side had faded (is oxidized the right word)?
it's so annoying...is that a known problem or do I just have to live with that?
btw: it looks much more painful in real than in these photos

This is weird, I haven’t read of anodized color just rubbing off. Might be able to claim warranty for faulty coating.
Was that part of it exposed to sunlight?

no, not really. This is more like a storage room. It has only like frosted glass there, so no direct sunlight.
