I reside alone in a small townhouse and my sound bar is on the way out. I have an Apple TV 4K and instead of a new sound bar , was thinking about just getting a pair of headphones to pair with Apple TV. I figured the air pods max pro would give me a good audio experience. What is everyone’s opinion and has anyone ever did this before ?

If you like over the ear headphones, then yes that will work great. I personally love my AirPods Pro, so I use those. Either one will provide a more immersive and personal experience than a soundbar, in my opinion. They also both support Apple's Spatial Audio.

So you used the air pods max pro as a sound bar alternative?

I have the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Max and 2 HomePods as a stereo pair. While each has their advantages, the immersive sound quality of the AirPods Max is extraordinary. It’s especially noticeable in films like Interstellar which have extraordinarily deep bass — the type that would rumble your movie theatre sit and which instead gently rumble your headphones. I was actually surprised and delighted the first time I came across that scene with my Max on. The AirPods Pro 2 also do well in that scene but come up short compared to the Max.

I think the bigger questions are:
- do you plan on only watching by yourself (no friends/companions)
- is your environment sensitive to loud noises (e.g., neighbors nearby)
- is this something you want to do now, or can you comfortably wait?

Depending on your answers, you may want to buy speakers or wait for the next AirPods Max, which promise better noise cancellation, sound quality, USB C connectivity and likely battery life. Granted, that might be 10 months out, but if your current system can sustain you until then, it might be worth the wait.

They work well with AppleTV in that you can set them as the default speaker and their sound is great for their size, though I do find the Max a bit more immersive. I also occasionally watch something on my MacBook Pro/iPad Pro and AirPlay the sound to the speakers, which stays in sync unlike typical Bluetooth connections.

The second gen HomePods should sound a bit better (check out iPhonedo’s YouTube review for examples) and overall I highly recommend them. I’d love to see Apple support 5 or more HomePods/minis for a home theater setup, but since I doubt they will this is the closest you’ll get.

Some folks have issues with HomePods in general which is likely related to Wi-Fi issues. I use a Synology RT6600AX (which I also highly recommend) and have no problems, but I’ve seen a few Eero users with issues so your user experience may vary depending on the signal quality and configuration of your network.

I will only say that for the price of 2 and you will need 2 HomePods, you could find a soundbar with 2 speakers that would produce a more immersive sound.
I have 2 HomePods (1rst gen) and luv em dearly for music.
I have AirPods Pro and use the crap out of them for movies. I'm hooked on the spatial audio and it's the only reason I got them.
