Since the Chicago Air and Water Show has been going on I have been trying to take some good pictures with my iPhone with little success. It has been nearly impossible to get a good shot because it has been very bright and I also wear polarized sunglasses that make the screen of the phone black. Anyway, I am posting the best picture I took from the Thunderbirds performance this afternoon. If there are any other plane buffs that have taken pictures with any kind of camera I would be interested in looking at them. I will take more tomorrow and Sunday with my Canon Digital Rebel.

^^What kind of planes are those? I know the one on the bottom is from the Royal Air Force but the ones above that? Are they MIG's? They look like they are from Switzerland with the cross on the tail. Is Switzerland still "neutral"?

They're my dad's photos from the 90s.
The Swiss ones are a Swiss air display team flying Hawker Hunters.
The bottom one is a Mosquito.

A couple of his photos are on his Flikr.

I had a rehearsal and concert to sing in on the Millennium Park stage today, and when I came out of the East Monroe garage, I saw a plane fly by...and then heard it. :D I have another concert tomorrow night, and I'm thinking of coming into the city early and catching some of the show. Looks like it's gonna be awesome as usual!

The Air Show should start around 12:00 on both Saturday and Sunday. I think the water part starts at 10:00. Just remember, the loudest thing you will hear is the B-1B or the Bone. That plane is so loud that it feels like your soul is escaping your body when it flies by.

Anyway, time to get the cooler ready so I can stake out my spot before the crowd get there.

Yeah, it's been quite a few years since I last came to one of the shows. I remember getting really excited about the show when i was a kid. Hopefully i'll make it out this weekend.

I recently got to see the Vulcan fly at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford. For something that was designed to drop The Bomb, it was a bloody beautiful plane.

One of the Vulcan's crashed after take off at Glenview Naval Air Station near Chicago in 1978. That is an awesome looking plane. I took a bunch of pictures yesterday but I don't have a compact flash card reader so I will have to burn a DVD at work tomorrow.

Quote from Wikipedia:

On 12 August 1978, a British Avro Vulcan B2 XL390 of No. 617 Squadron Royal Air Force crashed during an air display. The crash occurred at around 400 ft (120 m), after a possible stall during a wing-over. The plane crashed into a landfill just north of Willow Road. All four crew members aboard perished.[5]

Growing up my grandfather was always taking me to air shows. He was a RAF pilot during WW1. My family is researching his military history. He was older when he had my Dad. He died in his late 90s. He used to tell me cows used to eat the fabric skins on the planes because there was something in the "doping" as he called it, that they liked. MC
