So, I got a 11.6" Air about two weeks ago. I think the first few days I had it it reconnected to WiFi instantly after waking up from sleep, I THINK. Anyway, I know now it doesn't. Any time I open the lid it'll have the "connected" icon in the menu bar, but internet won't work. Then after a few seconds the WiFi connection will drop and it'll start reconnecting. This process takes up to 20 seconds.

It's annoying, especially since my old Macbook was actually internet-ready from wake-up faster than the air.

Anybody else have this problem, and maybe a fix?

I can rule out that it's a problem with my network, as it worked fine on my old Macbook, and the network remains unchanged. Also I tried it on several different networks, and I have the exact same results on all of them.
:(

DaSal -- I think your problem is not directly related to the speed at which your MBA's Airport client reestablishes its Internet connection. Instead, its a problem that many MBA owners have reported here. Apparently, if an MBA has been closed long enough to go into deep sleep, a period of between 5 and 15 seconds will be required for it to wake up. When it has happened to me, my Airport icon will indicate maximum signal strength when I first open up the MBA but the computer is really still asleep, as indicated by both the keyboard and trackpad being unresponsive. After the keyboard and trackpad are once again responsive, the Airport icon will go blank for a moment and then, finally, reestablish its connection to my network.

To confirm if gwsat is right, try putting it to sleep with the AC adapter plugged in. That will prevent it from going into "deep sleep." It should wake up instantly.

I tried your suggestion, even with the AC adapter on, it shows the same behavior. Furthermore, it'll do it even if I let the Air sleep for like, 40 seconds. (Though, it does seem to be a *little* faster? Not sure if that makes any sense, though)

Perhaps an application or plug-in on your system is slowing something down. Usually, when I wake it up from sleep (when plugged into the AC), the screen comes on within a second. It usually takes 5-10 seconds for the wi-fi to connect and the Internet to become accessible, but the system becomes responsive almost immediately.

I have the same response when I open up my MBA. Although the screen lights up almost instantaneously, a few more seconds are required for the MBA's Airport client to complete its handshaking procedure with the wireless router.

I guess it might be normal. The weird thing though is that, while the MBA is "responsive" sooner than my old white Macbook, the MBA takes longer to be "internet ready". The white Macbook took about 7-8 seconds to become responsive but then internet was ready to go to.

My MBA's Airport client completes its connection routine with the router, a Time Capsule, exactly as my old MBP has always done. I can't tell a bit of difference.

same problem!

I am also having this problem with my 2010 MBA. Close the lid, then open it and the Air wakes instantly but takes another 25 seconds to connect to the internet. Has anyone found a solution? If not, should I take it back to Apple?

I have noticed the same thing with my air. Though some times it doesn't actually reconnect and I have to select it from the list manually.

I checked the software updates last night and the only thing waiting to be installed was an iDVD update.

+1. The same problem... after closing the machine, when I open it around 20 seconds to have internet connection by Airport, and sometimes I have to select the network from the list manually.

In my MBP no such delay....

Any comments?

To those having issues, are you on 10.6.6 or 10.6.5? Have heard of wifi issues with those who have updated, so I'm still on 10.6.5 and have absolutely no problems, airport connects in a snap.

For me, the issue happens in both versions.

(maybe a hardware - local router - dependent issue? I need to try with another router but I think that I have already experienced the issue in two distinct wireless lans with distinct routers)

well, my macbook pro 15" of 2008 is already connected when i open it up from sleep. it takes 2 second for the screen to appear and everything is ready. it's really weird what's happening with the air. it's supposed to be an "instant-on" netbook/laptop.

Are you selecting SLEEP from the Apple menu then closing the lid, or just closing the lid? Both should have the same effect, but I was just curious.

Already had a replacement MBA for another reason however both had the issue... I was actually assuming the problem was with my router but perhaps not!

It may have to do with version 10.6.6. My 2010 white macbook has the same issue. Sometimes it even connects to a random network from one of the neighbours too, which is strange as I have never joined those networks before

Please someone help. When I open up my macbook pro i can get on the internet right away. When I open up my MBA, it takes 20 seconds for the internet to load. This is completely contradictory to Apple's instant on advertising. What are my options? Will Apple give me a new one? Will they come out with a software update? Thanks in advance.

Same behavior here. In fact, I've noticed the same behavior when using the USB NIC. So both my wireless and USB NIC on my 11.6 MBA take about 20 seconds to reconnect to the network after waking from sleep.

Not a huge deal for me. I have just chalked it up to the way the immediate sleep/wake process works on the new MBAs.

I have the 11" MBA. I have 2 preferred networks, at home and at my daughters. I have the connection problem at both, usually not reconnecting after reopening. If I put in the password it says its wrong. I usually have to restart it then its ok. Annoying if you have something open you need. Its worse at my daughters. If I stand right next to the router it sometime catches, then its ok.

I have read this on another forum if anyone can explain it to me, in simple terms, please?

I hope you are using AES for your WPA/WPA2 Personal - it is the only supported encryption for 802.11N. It will give you problems if it is set to TKIP.
Have you selected a specific channel or are you running it on Auto? If Auto, try selecting a channel.

would this work at both venues? Thanks.

I have noticed that the 2010 MBA WiFi reception is somewhat worse than my previous MBA and the MB I had before that. This is especially true for 5 GHz signals. It wasn't clear in the OP whether you were testing in the same room or whether you were trying to reconnect in another room, in which case the signal strength could be an issue. Also, some routers are configured to broadcast their presence more often than others - might be useful to test another router (ex: at a friend's home, at an Apple store, etc.).
