17 Pro or Pro Max?

The 6.3" 17 Pro is thicker than the Air but I actually find it easier to use one-handed since it's shorter and narrower.
I was talking about 17 pro yeah, I love the air and 90% of the time I don’t need the extra camera just considering selling the air and picking up a 17 pro since I’ll be going to Japan next march and I think I’ll miss the cameras there

If you’ve used ultra wide before you’ll miss that lens.

It’s why I kept my 16 Pro when I got this Air.

The 16P has been assigned to ‘travel camera’ duty.

i wish i could have kept my 16PM for that reason but since im on the upgrade program i cant keep my phones unless i pay the other half. but at the same time literally only time i will ever miss the cameras is during travel or concerts which both dont happen a lot

I had that concept too, keeping my 15PM for travel or special activities, but I just couldn’t force myself in being 100% satisfied. There are moments where I take spontaneous random picture and wished the the other lenses was there. Picture comes out fine, but not same like the Pro series.

Especially compromising a lot of important features when coming from Pro Max and paying premium price for just form factor.

End up retuning the Air and trying to see if I can grab a 17PM.

question does the 17 Pro still feel big compared to the Air?
Apple specs the Air display at 6.55″ diagonally. They round that down to 6.5″.

The iPhone 17 Pro display is 6.27″, but rounded up to 6.3″.

So the display size difference is 0.3″ rather than the 0.2″ you’d guess from the headline specs of 6.5″ versus 6.3″.

For that reason and maybe also the contrast between its width and depth (thickness), the Air feels a lot wider than the 17 Pro in the hand.

The 17 Pro, though is much bulkier because of its increased thickness (from the already thick 16 Pro) and huge camera bump.

The 17 Pro is shockingly chunky after you’ve used the air for some time. Depending on your hand size and how you grip your phones, it may be easier or harder to hold.

I went Air to Pro, I miss the Air, much nicer to hold and use but I eventually decided the camera benefits of the Pro just outweighed the weight and design benefits of the Air. The Pro feels like a total chunkola in comparison.

Unless you have larger hands, for one handed usage the Pro should generally be easier to use, at least with regard to reach and stretching... obviously it's heavier and chunkier in general feel.

The Air is nicer to hold for sure, but it's still a larger footprint. So even though it's thin, I find myself having to stretch a bit more at times, even without a case on it (my hands are pretty average sized). The Pro definitely feels chunkier, though, so you just have to choose which you prefer (like pretty much everything between these phones :) ).

I have the air and thinking about switching to the pro for the cameras for my trip to Japan come march. Though 85% to 90% of the time I never use them. Using the air is no problem for me as I don’t have small hands. I used a pro max up until this generation just got tired of a big phone lol

I got the Pro on launch day, 14 day returned it for an Air, returned that for a Pro, returned that for an Air, and returned that for a Pro (which I destroyed the box for to prevent another return... don't judge, hyper fixation is a symptom of my mood disorder).

I enjoyed the weight and profile of the Air more, it was a pleasure to hold and use, especially for long periods of time and felt like the future. The width was fine for me, it was a little tall for one handed use, but adjusting your grip to reach is easy due to the weight. I do prefer the height width of the Pro more for one handed use, but the thickness and weight are less desirable and noticeable.

The battery life was better than anticipated. It got me through an average work/weekday. Weekends, depending on how heavy my usage was, would require a top off at the end of the day. I will say that the C1X modem in the Air is definitely more efficient than the X80 in the Pro. Comparing the battery drain while on cellular while out and about, the Air had slower battery drain despite the smaller battery. Speeds were comparable for me on T-Mobile.

I take 80% of my photos with the main lens, 16% with the ultrawide, and 4% with the telephoto. I use the ultrawide enough that I missed it and the general sharpness and low light quality on the main sensor on the Air wasn't quite as good as the Pro and I love taking photos, especially when traveling.

So, for ease of one handed use and less FOMO with the camera, I went with the Pro.

Damn bro. No judgment cuz I flip flopped also. I just did it in my mind rather than buying and returning lol.

You can probably still return the phone without a box. The air is so nice... ;)

My credit card statement wishes I would've done it in my head. Waiting for all these refunds has me sweating. I also had to go up a storage capacity level to get back to the Pro, because I couldn't find what I originally had, in stock around me. So I am paying more than I planned.

I was so ashamed by the time of the last return, that I drove halfway across the state to a different Apple Store where they wouldn't recognize me.

According to Apple's return policy, a 14 day return policy requires the original packaging and contents/accessories. Now if there were a defect, maybe they'd make an exception.

LOL. I'm not the only one. I returned 3 iPhones (went 15 Pro -> iPhone Air -> 17 Pro Blue -> 17 Pro Silver - > 15 Pro) and went to three different Apple Stores. Considering trying a 17 base model, but I'm taking a break lol.

You guys (with an assist from the posters in the screen lottery thread) are certainly doing your part to make sure that Apple repair has an adequate supply of refurbs for many years to come!

I just bought one and live with it.. if I need a ultra wide I will just live with regular shots.. maybe back up a little.

Yeah I love the air it’s just I’m afraid the camera and battery won’t be enough during my trip in Japan. I just don’t know if using a phone that I don’t like the look and feel of is worth the extra features lol

To be honest, I would recommend a proper camera for Japan (or anywhere). Phone cameras are convenient but they still leave a lot to be desired.

It would be enough if you look at your photos as more about the art and thought put into it then what tool you are using. That’s just me though, maybe it will make or break your shot.

At one point I had Air, 17P and 17PM all on hand. This is my personal experience.

PM is PM, very big and heavy.

The Pro is narrower and thicker so it's easier to grip one handed. The Air is much thinner and noticeably wider, so it's harder to grip. It boils down to weight VS grip to me.

Just rub your 17 pro a few times and it turns pink apparently lol. If you want to get both phones, maybe consider one of those free carrier deals if you have a phone to turn in. Personally, I don't feel like managing two personal phones. One of the somewhat unexpected bonuses from picking the air over the pro is how much I appreciate the larger screen.

When Apple starts charging everybody restocking fees, we'll know who to blame it on

I agree. It feels heavier and more awkward to use than the Air. Also, the weight of the Air feels more balanced.

IMO the 17 Pro feels nicer in the hand than the Air. I know that may be an unpopular opinion but the Air is wider and although it’s lighter and thinner than the 17 Pro feels a little more unwieldy than the 17 Pro. The 17 Pro although thicker and heavier, isn’t as wide as the iPhone Air and it just fits nice and snug in your hand with no need for finger gymnastics like you still need at times with the Air.

Having said that, I went back to the 17 Pro Max. I just couldn’t get used to the smaller display of the 17 Pro. The screen felt cramped. As for the Air..it had too many compromises with camera the biggest. I have children so I want that telephoto lens for sports, vacations etc. I also missed the .5 uw lens. The 17 Pro Max is a big boy but coming from the 15 Pro Max I felt right at home with it.
