On both my iMac/10.8.5 and iPhone 5/7.0, I have AirDrop enabled.

Yet, neither device recognizes the other via AirDrop. Is this because they are different OSs or is this a consequence of Operator Error?

Airdrop doesn't work between OS X and iOS.

Indeed, that answers that, even if I had hoped I could mix & mingle AirDrop amongst OSs.
 
I'm curious if they'll add this feature. It would certainly be VERY useful for transferring files.

It would be useful but also confusing for users due to the limitations of what you can do with files in iOS. I'd like to see the ability added, regardless.
