Airdrop only works when....?

Hey was just trying out airdrop and my machines only show up to each other when both are activly in the airdrop window. Is this the case for every one else? Seems kinda low tech to have to be in the window and now have it pop up on it's own when someone sends you something.

No, that is exactly the point of airdrop. It's there for when you're next to eachother and would otherwise use a USB stick, rather than figure out how to set up or use a network.
