AirDrop stopped working

My elderly parents own a late-2013 MacBook Pro.

Yesterday, I updated the laptop from MacOS 10.12.6 Sierra to 10.14 Mojave.

Since that time, I cannot reliably get AirDrop to work. Other devices do not see the laptop.

AirDrop was working fine before installing Mojave.

Any ideas on how to get AirDrop working again?

Following the Settings instructions actually worked. Counter-intuitively, I turned on the Firewall but made sure it deselected "block all incoming connections".

today the MacBook air went from snow leopard-Mt Lion to high sierra
and everything (icloud sync, safari, air drop etc,) needed time to work.
just an apple thing i guess!
