AirDrop vs. Connect to Server

If someone is on my network, I see their Computer icon on my desktop, and should they choose, they can see my Computer icon.

If I want to share a file, I merely drop it on their Computer icon.

So how is Airdrop any better? Alas, this poor grasshopper remains unenlightened. Is it just that one need not know the recipient's server address?

I think it's real purpose is to simplify file sharing for the "less enlightened" Mac user. This way, people won't need to muck around with File Sharing prefs, permissions, etc.

Airdrop doesn't seem to work on my macbook.

I think its better for 90% of the people who don't wish to keep on clicking on different mac's/pc's and then access the public folder. Everyone is not comfortable with the concept of a finder and moving into hierarchy of folders. One way implementation of FTP is a great concept.

Also, for power users, SSH and FTP through terminal are great utilities and will always be there.

Summary: It's just an easy implementation.
