Just got this e-mail from them:

Hi there AirMail pre-orderers!

We hope this email finds you well. OK, here's the bummer:

We've encountered some pretty significant delays that are going to prohibit us from shipping out your AirMail sleeve for another two weeks. We're really appreciate your order, more than you could ever know, really! We're not a big business, or even a small business; we're just two people working as hard as we can to get this insanely overwhelming project fully realized and on your doorstep. We never expected to be on every blog on the internet and to sell thousands of sleeves to nice people like you all around the world! But that's the reality and we're going to work ourselves to the bone make this cool thing for you.

Sit tight and we'll make you smile. If you'd like to cancel your order, just reply to this email and let us know.

Love,
Jona & Claire

PS- A lot of you have already received your MacBook Airs and we're SO jealous! We haven't received ours yet!
This is a serious bummer. I was planning on taking a trip sometime in the next couple of weeks, but I don't want my MBA leaving the safety of my desk without a case...

Maybe they got lost in the mail?

I'll be curious what you and others think of this case when you get and use it. It's clearly about as clever (if obvious) an idea for a case with built-in marketing you can get. I just wonder how the case will be in practical use. I'm guessing it'll be decent at least as padding for keeping your MBA in a backpack or the like.

Cry me an absolute river. Put things in perspective; I ordered my MBA back on the 17th and the mofo of a thing hasn't even shipped yet. While you're waiting, dish out the cash and get a decent bag from LV. ;)

It's a clever idea, yes, but it's poor execution. I'm honestly rather confused with their logic in producing these things. Did they not think that a case like that would become popular? Two people cannot produce the sheer volume needed to satisfy the demand in a reasonable time frame. They should have thought through everything before going gung-ho.

I just travelled with my MacBook Air and and a MacBook. I ended up using Apple's cellophane wrapper to protect its overly delicate finish and slipped both the MacBook and MBA in a 13-inch sleeve I picked up for free at a conference. :p

But I definitely will have to get something fast. I will also buy the Manilamac's envelope because it's just too cool for Mr. Ubercool!

I was wondering about that. It seemed like a pretty small "company" when they put out the ad. Hope they pull through all right -- but as many have pointed out, even Apple can't keep up with the demand for the computers, so it makes sense that they can't keep up with the demand for the sleeves.

This is one reason why Apple's obsession with absolute secrecy is such a bummer... they won't give anyone any heads-up about what's coming out, so no one has a chance to have anything ready for the product launch... no cases, no accessories, nothing. As a result, the first people to buy any given Apple product, particularly the portable ones that might get scratched or dented, have to handle their toys with kid gloves for a month or two before they can get some protection. It's true for practically every iPod I've owned, it was true for the iPhone, and it's true for the MBA.

I do think it would be a good idea for them to stop taking orders until they get their process fully up-and-running.

There are other cases available but I get that is not the point. What is interesting to me is that they appeared to be the first on the scene with a case/sleeve. Were they not able to produce them prior to the release of the new notebook?

I presume if they had begun selling "preorders" on the sleeves was their intention to only produce after they received a MBAir to ensure the fit was just right? Small company or not is there evidence that anyone has received their sleeve? Has this company taken your money? Does this company know "We're really appreciate your order" is borderline broken English? ;)

I'm not tossing out the something is fishy card, but I am going to toss out the idea that someone didn't execute their business plan very well.

Um, Original Mac OS -> Bill Gates bullshatting his way to get a copy -> Poorly made ripoff known as Windows.

OS X Tiger + Leopard Developer Beta -> Poorly made ripoff known as Vista

There is a reason for secrecy.

That's a horrible analogy, and you know it.

If Apple won't let anyone else in a little early (with full NDAs and whatnot) when they're getting set to release a new product, then they should take it upon themselves to create some accessories in time for the launch. I'm not talking anything fancy, just something rudimentary that we can use to (say) protect our gear from scratches and bumps.

Strange thing is .... I still haven't received that new email yet ?

Though I did get the last one about a delay about 10 days ago.

Do you think they could be shipping some and not all ?

While I do understand your logic as to being prepared for the new baby to arrive you have to also understand the importance of Apple's secrecy. Most companies do the same as Apple as far as secrecy however they are not as tight-lipped and there's always a leak, Dell and Sony's products always get leaked out.

It's good business for Apple to keep tight-lipped with product updates and releases in order to prevent a slow down in sales of current products. Take your selfishness away for a moment and pretend you have your own consumer electronics company, if you were to reveal to the public a new model that's forth coming (say within a couple of months) your customers will begin to ignore what you currently are selling in order to save their money for the forthcoming model.
You will now have a lot of backup inventory that you have to clearance out. Maybe you haven't noticed but several companies are either merging or branching out due to a drop in sales.
Compaq/HP and even Dell is now offering their products in retail stores due to sales dropping.

OK, first, I'm not being selfish. I'm merely commenting on the problems associated with keeping a product so totally in the dark that when you reveal it, it takes weeks or months for an ecology of accessories to form.

And second, that's why there's such a thing as an NDA. No one rational is demanding that Apple tell us all what they are planning to do. But it's not unreasonable to expect that they might get with an accessories maker or two, put them under strict NDA, and ask them to come up with stuff like carrying cases (which are not high-tech and just need some basic stuff, like dimensions, in order to create) in time for the product launch.

Now, it's your choice but personally what the hell is this manilla envelope case about that anyone would spend money on it? It doesn't look like anything you can't buy at a stationary store and I think the guys who are selling this are laughing at everyone buying one. It doesn't look professional or protective, IMO.
It's not an envelope. It looks like an envelope. You can't buy this at a stationery store.

But your opinion is yours.

I don't see the correlation between a consumer’s desire to have an accessory made available for a new product on or right around the time it is released and a general statement of him being selfish. Removing the idea that it may be prudent for Apple to release some specs such as dimensions to third parties I hold the accessory maker responsible for this delay. Here is why…

To the best of my knowledge there was no conclusive evidence that the makers of this sleeve offered any warning that the sleeves would not be ready. Since I am not a MBAir owner it is easy for me to miss the details of the implied release date of an accessory for the device. Regardless, this company has taken someone's money, or I am assuming since the OP didn't quite confirm that, and offered nothing but delays. I do not find it selfish to expect delivery or to believe that Apple could help the process along in the future. If this is a case of secrecy then perhaps they can treat this as they do the Developer's program. You apply, pay, etc. In the end the third party vendor will profit from their investment as they will have the ability to make something readily available at time of release of a new product.

That's a horrible analogy, and you know it.

That's a major reason for secrecy. Not defending the makers of the sleeve (see one possible DIY alternative I listed above), but due to secrecy, they cannot make the sleeve without something to measure for size.

Firstly, I will apologize for the selfish comment, I had a feeling it would be taken out of context. The word selfish was meant in terms of not thinking only on a consumer level, you have to look at it on a business level.
As a consumer we only think of what we need on our end and start getting annoyed with the company for not reacting like WE would want them to.

I already gave you a scenario as to why it would not be conducive for Apple to release news about a forthcoming product.
You mentioned the NDA, that's a joke, how many developers broke the NDA before Leopard was released? Unauthorized screenshots were posted of the Leopard builds and then copies were posted on the torrent sites.
There's another big reason why it would be highly stupid of Apple to tell accessory makers of unreleased products is due to the fact that they just might decide not to release the product. Right before product production Apple or any company may decide this product is not going to work out after all so what happens to all the accessory makers that went through the trouble of making bags and accessories for nothing? Well they may want to sue Apple, now do you get it?

On a side note there are tons of bags and sleeves to fit the AIR, the airmail sleeve is not the only one that would fit perfectly.

Well, I went ahead and canceled my order. I'm sure it will be a cool sleeve when it comes out, but I needed something more quickly so that I can actually take my MBA out of the house.
