I have noticed that if I put my iPhone in airplane mode, as soon as it goes to standby, even if playing music from the iPod app, airplane mode is turned off. This means that one can NOT put the iphone in airplane mode on an actual airplane, and expect it to stay in this mode during the flight!

I discovered this when I put the iphone in airplane mode because I kept getting GSM noise on my clock radio (which is turned off by the way!). I would put the iPhone in standby, set the thing back on my nightstand, and hear the GSM noise again (as an aside, how the heck do GSM phones pass FCC class B with this much EMI radiation!). I turn the iphone back on, and airplane mode is off. It only seems to stay in Airplane mode as long as the iPhone is active with the screen on.

Has anyone else noticed this?

You probably have your phone set to autosync, so docking it changes the mode or could be your email is set to retrieve and that would possibly change the mode of the phone. I use airplane mode all day at work and have not had this problem.

Odd,

After updating to 1.0.1, I no longer see this issue. I can't say it is due to 1.0.1 or something else. Nothing else has changed as far as I can tell...

Yes, I've had the exact same thing happen.

I was in an area with no signal, and noticed that the iPhone was losing battery charge at a high rate (my old Treo 300 did this...apparently it kept looking so hard for a signal that the battery drained as fast as if I were actually on a call).

So, I put it into Airplane Mode. I picked up the phone 5-10 minutes later, and Airplane Mode was off (no icon on the main screen). I turned it back on, and it happened again. I probably turned it on 10 times, and every time it turned itself back off.

However, I turned Airplane Mode on about 20 minutes ago (I'm at work), and it's still set, so apparently this is an intermittent problem.

Either way, I've submitted both issues (the draining battery and Airplane Mode not staying) to Apple's Feedback section. If anyone else is having similar issues, please go to http://www.apple.com/feedback and submit the info. It's more likely to get fixed if more than one person brings it to their attention.

Thanks,

Craig

The draining battery is probably because the radio is transmitting at full power, looking for a signal.

Don't worry too much about the airplane mode. Yes, its annoying that it wont stay, but it certainly wont affect the flight instruments. I've used my cell phone plenty of times while I was flying (as in, me piloting the airplane, not just as a passenger) and never noticed a thing on the instruments. On my headset, all I got was a little clicking or beeping noise when the call was established or when I got a text.
