I see a lot of new devices including the HomePod saying that they will support Airplay 2. However some like SONOS etc. don't support Airplay (1st gen).
I know that some of Airplay 2's functionalities are not supported on older macs, but I wonder if the basic features are. For example, playing music from iTunes into the speaker, using airplay, while connected to the same wifi network and so on.

Yes. Airplay 2 features are a superset of Airplay—primarily syncing of multiple playback devices and setting multiple homepods as stereo pairs.

For me it just feels odd, that some manufacturers are implementing Airplay 2 but they never implemented Airplay (1st gen). It seems like a strange approach.
