can the apple tv send audio to an airport express while sending video through hdmi. my speakers dont have an optical input but i dont want to play audio through the tv speakers. this is for movies not for music.

I don't think you can do that.

If you want music out the speakers, you'd select AirportExpress when you hit airplay.

If you want audio w/ video, you'd select the AppleTV.

Splitting the video signal off and the audio out of the same source to a separate component is probably not happening.

i was hoping i wasnt gonna have to buy optical to rca adaptor but i might have to. or a speaker system with optical.

I would really like this feature to be added in the future- mainly so I can leave the audio on the iOS and use the headphones and then airplay the video- for when in bed or on treadmill.

Does your TV have an audio out? I have an appleTV via hdmi, and then rca audio out from tv to stereo, works great, can turn down tv speakers all the way and still get audio thru stereo.
