I think the answer is yes, but I wanted to be sure.

My ISP, ATT will begin capping monthly downloads. Ironically, thanks to ATT I have unlimited 3G data on my iPhone. So I want to be able to wirelelessly steam Netflix from my phone to my tv. AirPlay plus apple tv would seem to enable that.

Any other cordless solutions to make that happen? Apple dock? Third party?

Not a cap, a limit: 150 gigs. After that the next 50 gigs is ten bucks. Cheap enough to avoid phone failure.

Your going to halve to stream a lottttt of netflix to hit that cap.

Cap or limit, can I wirelessly stream Netflix to tv with apple tv and AirPlay?

I don't think the Netflix app supports AirPlay. However, it does support wired video out so you can use Apple's Component AV cable to connect your iPhone to any TV that accepts 480p component inputs. I've used my iPad 3G in just such a manner (both over WiFi and 3G).

In any case, you can't use 3G with AirPlay because you need to have WiFi enabled for AirPlay to work and you can't have both 3G and WiFi enabled at the same time.(*)

Here is a list of AirPlay enabled apps:

http://theapple.tv/apps/list-of-airplay-enabled-apps/

Note, however, that in my hands several of these apps do not work reliably over AirPlay.

I have had success with the following AirPlay-enabled apps from Apple (once again, only for WiFi):

iPod (media player for iPhone/iPod touch)
Video (video player for iPad)
YouTube
Photos
Safari

As for Safari, most web sites do not work with AirPlay and many that are reported to work only work intermittently (or unpredictably).

I also have had success with AirPlay on the following third-party app but I'm not certain whether any of these support video out with Apple's component AV cable:

Newsy (not 100% reliable over AirPlay)
Pogoplug (only works when paired with a Pogoplug device -- which is a type of file server/NAS)
StreamToMe
PBS (for iPhone/iPod touch, NOT the "PBS for iPad" app)

(*)Perhaps if you had a tethering plan with your iPhone you could use the phone's 3G network to supply a WiFi connection to the Apple TV and that might work with Netflix. But, I'm fairly certain that AT&T's tethering plans have fairly low data caps and you'd have to pay extra for tethering anyway. In any case, it would be cheaper to go with Apple's Component video cable and I know for a fact that the AV cable will work with Netflix over 3G.

Thanks. I didn't realize that all connections need to be wi-fi, that you couldn't just stream the tv-out through apple tv.

I know that I can connect my iphone with a cable to my tv. I'm looking for a way to do this without a cable/cord, so I can control Netflix (in particular) from the comfort of the couch across the room--and without using wifi. Does the Apple Doc--or any third-party dock or gizmo--do this? Even if I had to set the movie selection at the phone, but could do play/pause, I'd be satisfied.

get the HDMI adapter! You have to be connected to WIFI to get the airplay to work. And BTW.. my internet has a cap of 200Gbs a month. I use XboxLive a lot.. download files for work... and upload... LOT's of netflix... and all of that doesn't even hit 100GBs... 150GBs is enough. If you're running a server or something.. then maybe not.

The HDMI adapter would be an option if the OP has an iPhone 4, however, that won't work on the earlier versions of the iPhone. Also, I can't confirm whether the HDMI adapter works with the Netflix app as I've only used Apple's Component AV cable.

Also, Netflix only supports video out (wired) on the iPad, iPhone 4, and 4th-generation iPod touch. I didn't know that until today when I tried to use Netflix with my iPhone 3GS (i.e. Netflix video out doesn't work with the 3GS). Previously I had always used my iPad and that does support video out.

Lastly, I have a several-year-old Apple Universal Dock and I tried to use that as an IR remote for Netflix. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to offer play/pause support with the Netflix app. In this case I used a 4th-generation iPod touch and while the video out worked with my component AV cable the IR remote only controlled the volume, play/pause did NOT work within the Netflix app (although play/pause did work with Apple's own Videos and Music apps). Of course, it's possible that Apple might have changed something in the more recent versions of the dock and that a newer dock might work with the Netflix app, but I kind of doubt it.

To summarize, the OP would need an iPhone 4 to get video out from the Netflix app and it appears that the Netflix app does NOT support play/pause functionality with Apple's Universal Dock. Also, I can't confirm whether the HDMI adapter works with Netflix, I've only used the component AV cable.
