have 3 year old Macbook pro., latest Sierra. Apple tv gen 2.
When i start airplay to connect by wifi to Atv 2 the menu ar and sidebar items of applications eg Safari, preview, mail, are blacked out. I have reset Atv, restored software of atv and macbook.
I even borrowed an Atv gen 3 and got the same result.
Any ideas welcome.

Is this occurring on the TV screen, the Mac screen, or both? It sounds to me like the Apple TV simply can't handle the resolution the MacBook Pro is giving it.

So my initial guess was incorrect. The root cause could be any number of things, but I think the most likely cause is a GPU driver bug, slipped through the cracks because so few Mac users have 2nd-gen Apple TVs, even fewer with the specific Mac you have. Since you have Sierra, I suggest generating a screen shot of the issue on your Mac and submitting feedback to Apple. That'll increase the odds of this getting fixed. If you're a developer, head to the usual bug reporting channel instead.

I agree with the resolution issue. You could also try change the resolution on the ATV, though it should be set to default. At any rate, I believe it is under General settings, Audio/Video, TV resolution. This has worked for me in the classroom with a projector.
