I've been used to using my iOS devices to play video media on my Apple TV (mainly: tv channels, HBO Nordic and Plex). Of course, I was absolutely thrilled to find out that it would be possible to use AirPlay in Safari in El Capitan. Now it's here and I find it pretty useless.

So few sites/players are supported. I've only come across Vimeo and YouTube – which have separate apps for the Apple TV anyway.

Have I missed something? What good is this feature?

Would be nice if it was as comprehensive as on iOS, but at least it's a start.

A use I'm looking forwards to is local QuickTime playback without having to mirror an entire desktop. I do motion work and often share things to our conference room tv. We'll see how it works out in practice.

It just adds a non mirroring options from a Mac like an iOS device has. IMO this adds functionality or more accurately brings functionality back since its much easier to AirPlay a video and still use the Mac normally.
