Airplay issues

OK, I have a AppleTV2 (using mostly for video) and an airport Express (802.11g) (second source for patio) and I am having constant inconsistent dropouts in audio from not only my Macbook but also my wives and both of our iPhones (4 & 5). I tired reinstalling the software on the Express and it still happens. On the Apple TV it is not as problematic bus still happens. If I access my music from the iTunes, not a dropout.

What am I missing, where could this problem be stemming from?

You might have interference from another nearby wireless network.
The Airport Express is also an older one, but I have the same and I send Music over it to My AV System and don't have problems.
Are you sure you have the latest AppleTv Firmware?
Are there any nearby sources which interferes with your network, microwave ovens for instance, lots of electronic stuff can interfere.

Could I have interference from my own network? FWIW, I am using an ATT router. I did make sure all of my firmware was indeed updated. I thought (err hoped) the issue would go away when I got the 5, but it didn't.

Interference from your own router, no, from a different source,yes.
Have you tried another channel on the router, just try and looks what happens.

Have you ever scanned your surroundings for other networks, give that a try, maybe there are some conflicting with yours.

I changed the channel on the router, while it allowed my AppleTV to work better, I am still getting the dropouts on the Airport Express.

**some notorious sources of wireless interference.
cordless phones
baby monitors
microwave ovens (only when cooking).

if you have any of these, try unplugging them, and see if it fixes it.

**as far as channels, it takes 5 numbers for them not to overlap, so if you only moved one channel number away, you'll be hitting some of the same interfernce (good graphic here that shows the overlapping channels)
try another channel.

**what's between the main base and the express? (think about drawing a straight line between them that goes through the walls and everything else)
If you can, move things around so there's the least amount of stuff between them.
also if the signal goes through the wall at a right angle, you'll get a better signal. (walls appear thicker as the angle gets shallower) (it's like slicing bread, if you cut it on an angle, the pieces are bigger than if you go straight up and down)

** what's the express in?
if it's buried in a cabinet behind an amp, that's a lot of metal for the signal to go through
