So ... I just got in the brand new Apple TV (TINY!!) - and I love the device - small - fast - one thing though -

I've got the 4.2 beta on my iPad and iPod touch and I tried apps like Netflix, YouTube, AirVideo - and the AirPlay option is there BUT it just streams over the AUDIO no video streaming yet even with the betas - VERY disappointing - hopefully this will get fixed with future software updates

Even the native Videos/iPod app just stream audio right now - I'm sure this is just a software update fix away but for those wanting to use AirPlay today it's a no go

UNLESS - there is some setting I'm not seeing .... ?

Hopefully those apps will update for 4.2 soon. I thought I had read that Apple was allowing access to the AirPlay API.

Yea Pandora works great - seems odd that Apple's own apps see the Apple TV as only speakers (I'm thinking the update will come to the Apple TV itself with a 4.2 update on that! - we found out the AppleTV is running 4.1 - so that may be the hold up!)

Any other apps streaming audio yet (just to see if they will work over Airplay) such as Hulu+?

Hulu Plus is a no go - doesn't use the standard stuff - anything that can change audio sources (Bluetooth is the option before this) can do it - so Pandora on the iPod touch can - iPad cannot yet - but most things do this.

That's fairly disappointing. Isn't the whole point of a beta release to see how all aspects of the OS are functioning in the wild in order to address any bugs prior to release?

It's not an app thing. In fact the apps themselves don't have to do anything. For Airplay video to work, the Apple TV and the iOS device has to be running iOS 4.2. The Apple TV is on 4.1 right now. Apple already confirmed to Engadget that video over Airplay won't work until 4.2 is out in November.

The reason Hulu doesn't work is because they don't use the standard video player. Try playing a video in Hulu and you'll notice it doesn't work like most other apps and doesn't have the standard controls. However, Air Video does work with Airplay because it uses the standard API like most other apps. Of course only audio comes out of Air Video right now when using Airplay.

I wonder if apple will release a dev preview of 4.2 on AppleTV to test AirPlay?

Doubtful, since there is no easy way to download the update through the apple tv without making it available to everybody. With that in mind, I'm holding off on getting one of these until at least November, when the official iOS 4.2 is released for all devices. Even then I might just wait until a jailbreak option presents itself.

Airplay audio barely works.

There is serious lag.

Also after you exit app like videos the key clicks still come through to the AppleTV

Excited

I for one am excited it's not working yet; that means that Apple will be releasing a software update for the new Apple TV. Hopefully they'll pack a few surprises in too.
Perhaps the delay your seeing is due to your wireless network. My Apple TV needs less than 1 second to buffer when playing audio only (obviously can't test video yet). There also seems to be a synchronization algorithm in place as audio playback on both the apple tv and my laptop is perfectly in sync.
Finally the key presses you're hearing are because the iPhone and iPad have a master airplay control. Double tap the home button then swipe right twice. They will automatically disconnect once the screen goes to sleep. I'm personally not thrilled about this as I've had my text tones go silent during airplay use.

I agree. There will be an atv2 update in the near future for 4.2 support. I am hoping for an app store surprise.

Agreed as well -- I would suspect that Apple is working to get all of its iOS devices on the same version so they do not have to maintain different forks for each platform. I bet we'll see an AppleTV update released around the same time as 4.2 for the iPhone/iPad platforms.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C134 Safari/6533.18.5)

I noticed this today and was sad. Can't wait for video streaming as well. Going to be a really nice new standard.
