Airplay Mirroring and MKV format

I'm thinking of buying an Apple TV and Airplaying my 720p/1080p MKV files from my Mac to it in full screen. Because i'm tired of sitting at my desk to watch them and would rather sit on the comfy couch

Will this work or is it MP4 files only in typical Apple fashon?

Mirroring will mirror anything on your screen. Provided you have a 2011 sandy bridge computer or newer.
