Airplay Mirroring Interactivity?

Dear all

When using Airplay Mirroring to view content from a mac on an Apple TV, is it possible to use the Apple TV remote to interact with that content?

My wish is to use Plex on an Apple TV through my iMac (which is in another room) using the new Airplay Mirroring feature. My concern is that the mirroring is only able to send the image and not receive any inputs from the Apple TV remote.

yes and no, your not controlling the mac via the apple tv but macs can be controlled by IR remote controlls

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, buy the app HippoRemote. It has several predefined templates that use the Mac's built in VLC remote control capability to give touchpad input from your iOS device. An iPad equivalent could be Conductor. Has a Plex template already, and also a plain old touchpad for regular mouse movements.

Or you can use the remote control functionality of the actual PLEX iOS app.

Nothing significant about your Mac's behavior changes when using AirPlay. It's functionally no different than mirroring an image to your TV screen using an HDMI cable. If you are usually able to control your Mac using a remote then you'll be able to do so when using AirPlay Mirroring. You're not sending content to the AppleTV for it to process or interact with, you're only sending whatever if being displayed on your computer screen.

You can do what you want. Also have a look into the new Rowmote which should initiate the AirPlay mirroring, Plex as well as controlling Plex.

I do exactly what you are asking. I have two Apple remotes. One is paired to the iMac and the other to the ATV3. I the AirPlay mirror from the iMac to the ATV3 and run Plex.

The odd thing is the iMac's remote can now control Plex which is playing on the ATV. Somehow the ATV must be sending the remote signals back to the iMac. It is absolutely uncanny.
