I have a friend that has an ipad 1 and I'm thinking about getting them an Apple TV for christmas. What can they actually stream to it .... netflix, hulu +, other streaming apps? I was never quite sure what the capabilities and the restrictions were with airplay.

Itunes purchased films, and a lot of other things if you can tweak a few settings here and there. I used my iPad 1 with my gen1 and 2 ATV units without issues, it will of course depend on the quality of router, distance from it etc.

Honestly, I'm not sure; which is the frustrating thing. It can be very hit and miss. For instance I tried the iPlayer app which should support video Airplay, but the free videos only support audio Airplay. I don't feel like paying the money just to test if the paid videos work.
I use it for Youtube (Airplay almost always works) and if streaming a video from my Mac, via the iPad to the ATV.
