hi all,

i'm thinking of getting the ATV2 and have a question on quality issues. I have never used it so I don't know what it is like quality wise.

Will a video streamed through Airplay be of the same quality as it would otherwise be streamed directly via the ethernet cable? I mean if i connect the ATV2 via ethernet and stream movies from iTunes or the same movie using and app such AirVideo, will it be the same quality?

thanks
aldo

AirPlay itself doesn't degrade quality -- it just sends an already-encoded video stream over Wi-Fi, it doesn't do any further compression. In some cases Air Video (and similar apps that rely on a computer-based server) will recompress video on-the-fly, so that the video you see on your iOS device will be of lower quality than the original, and then the AirPlayed version will be the same as what you see on your iOS device. However, if the original video can be played on the ATV2 from iTunes, then Air Video should also be able to play (and AirPlay) it without recompressing it.

Yes, like he said Video Airplay is the same quality. There is no further compression or degrading of the quality going on with it. If you turn on mirroring, then yes there is but not the regular video Airplay.
