AirPlay vs Home Sharing

Is there really much difference? I've used AirPlay on my iPad and my ATV, and it's pretty awesome, have yet to try it on my MacBook. Now, because I have ML and a late 2011 MacBook Pro, I can essentially AirPlay all my music through to Apple TV, therefore, do I need to enable Home Sharing? Is there mush of a difference in quality?

I tried Home Sharing on my iPad and my ATV and it was good, though I prefer to use the actual remote.

The quality might not be that different depending on your connection speed, but AirPlay mirroring is the thing that is what's most important and what makes it even more awesome. With Home Sharing, you are limited to what you have in your iTunes library, with mirroring, you are not limited to what you can put on your TV through the AppleTV.

But as long as you're using the Airplay function, you should not have to enable home sharing, as far as I know.

You know you can still use the remote while something is being Airplayed from your iPad, right?

Well using AirPlay from your MacBook requires you to access your MacBook to select music, whereas with home sharing you can do that with the Remote app or actual remote on your Apple TV, which I find much more comfortable.

I didn't get that. Using home sharing *enables* you to use the actual remote on your ATV (to select albums etc.), when AirPlaying you can only pause / play / skip tracks. Or am I missing something?

AirPlay is for 'pushing' content to your Apple TV, Home Sharing enables you to 'pull' it. Use whichever is best/most convenient in the given circumstances. Embrace the chaotic contingency of life.
